Team ListTeam selection: R8 vs Melbourne at SCG, Sunday 3 May

I have chosen to start a team selection thread a bit early because the team selection has interesting decisions that will need a detailed discussion.

Considerations:
* Melbourne has one of the best rucks in the competition playing for them (Gawn).
* Sydney also has one of the best rucks (Grundy).
* Gawn and Grundy are likely to be selected as All-Australian rucks this year.
* Melbourne's second ruck option is Heath. He had 26 hitouts vs Richmond while Gawn had 21. His usual ruck numbers are a bit lower with a low possession count.
* Ladhams had a very good day out in the VFL where he dominated an injury-depleted Bulldogs.
* Ladhams needs a run in the seniors at some point even with Grundy playing. Now seems like a good time.
* Grundy will need a bit of a rest lest he be worn out and less effective by season's end.

My views:
* To manage one good opposition ruck, play two rucks.
* Is Ladhams a better ruck than Heath?
* Ladhams would win more possessions than Heath.
* With the team not needing to be named until Friday, team selection on Thursday has to include Ladhams on the extended bench.

Might be a fun game tonight between Richmond and Melbourne. Richmond have got plenty of young talent, so they'll probably cause an upset or two during the season. However, their lengthy injury list suggests that it might not be tonight.

Perhaps the most interesting match of the round is Hawthorn v Gold Coast. Hawthorn have been in the better form, but are possibly a bit vulnerable, due to Sicily and Moore getting themselves suspended. While Gold Coast should be strengthened by Anderson and Ugle-Hagan. It'd be nice if Ugle-Hagan went well, if only to further spoil the weekend of Dogs fans.

The Anzac Day Collingwood and Essendon should also be closely fought. Collingwood have been pretty meh all season, while Essendon have recently improved to meh.

The round finishes in Canberra, with the 14th placed GWS, hosting the 5th placed North. The fact that GWS are $1.45 favourites, is probably a good indication of North's soft draw so far.

The round starts tonight with a clash of the old enemies, Collingwood and Carlton. One of those games where if the quality of the game isn't great, it still might be worth watching, just to observe the feral fans going at each other. Not really sure who I want to win? On the one hand, I wouldn't mind seeing Collingwood slip further into the lower reaches of the table. On the other hand, watching Carlton sink further into crisis does appeal. Actually, go Carlton crisis!.

Probably the stand out match of the round is tomorrow night's game between the Cats and the Dogs. Shame it's on at the same time as our match with the Giants.

It's possible all the other games will be blow-outs. If the tipsters on the AFL site are anything to go by, they're going 12-0 in their predictions.

Interesting selection surrounding Hamling v Melican. Hamling was sound and appeared to have performed his role on Ben King. Melican was a surprise omission. Horses for courses selection?

Sheldrick will be available after serving his suspension. Co Warner might be most under the gun. Thought Harry was good and Lloyd has shown at times, as the other possibilities to make way.

Maclean may come into consideration for one of the tall forwards and give Grundy bit more ruck relief?

At least one change:
IN: Sheldrick
OUT: Co Warner
