This season Goodes has rucked, played half-forward, on the wing and a floating role, but he has not lined up in defence since a down-period in season 2002.

Goodes yesterday filled the backline void left by the injured Andrew Schauble and also released some pressure on rebounding defenders Leo Barry and Tadhg Kennelly.

At halftime Goodes was the leading possession winner for Sydney and had restricted Hawthorn centre half-forwards Danny Jacobs and John Barker to one touch between them.

"It showed what we wanted to do with him," Swans coach Paul Roos said. "We've wanted to do that for a fair while.

"But you've got a Brownlow medallist who hasn't played down back much. We asked him, 'Are you happy to play down back or up forward?' and he wanted to play back.

"We've had it up our sleeve but we haven't been game enough to bring it out."

Goodes was a team-lifter for the Swans, who thought they'd be without him when he tore his posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last week.

With Goodes ruled out of centre-bounce ruck contests, most, including Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab, thought he would play forward.

But he started at centre half-back on Jacobs, and although not 100 per cent fit, hardly showed signs of his injured right knee.

He looked proppy at one point in the first quarter when forced to turn abruptly to the right, and his acceleration appeared slightly hindered at times.

But Goodes was "beaten" on just three occasions in 120 minutes of play.

The first was when Jacobs led strongly, marked and goaled from 45m in the second term.

Trent Croad appeared to mark three minutes before three-quarter time but it was not paid.

The other two times were in the last quarter when Croad kicked two goals in two minutes and a tiring Goodes was exposed one-out in the goalsquare.

At that point Roos moved Goodes to full-forward and he then roamed up the ground and contested a crucial ruck contest deep in the Hawks' attacking zone in the dying minutes.

For the rest of the day Goodes outmarked, spoiled and pushed upfield to become an attacking option out of defence.

"I think it's a great spot to get the confidence back. Working off Jacobs and Barker today definitely gave me more of a role," Goodes said.

"In the forward line you have to go out and get the footy. Today I just had to stop my man getting the footy."
