For the punters (we're shortening, of course)

    Latest premiership odds

Very distressing that some sanity has returned to the betting market, just when I was going to take a plunge on Sydney at $34 (shouldn't have waited until after Sat night, I know).

We're $21 now (on the 7th line), and the market has returned to something resembling normalcy, i.e. people are betting more in accordance with the perceived likelihood of each team actually winning the GF, rather than just saying 'you won last weekend, I'll back you for premiers'. For example, Freo and Hawthorn were in front of us in the betting before the w/e, but they're both now behind us at $23 and $28, despite winning on the w/e. Or, in Fremantle's case, 'winning'.

The most interesting aspect is that the punters have not abandoned Geelong. They're still the #4 team for the flag at $7.50 (WCE, Adelaide & St Kilda are the first 3) despite:
    a) losing the last 3 in a row, and
    b) playing some really, really ordinary football on Sat night.

I'm surprised that the Saints are still in the top 4. Might be different if they get beaten by the Bulldogs this weekend.

I guess there is always so much good press around about the Saints revered list that they will always be one of the favourites.

I should have plunged on Sydney at $34 as well.

Through the NSW TAB the odds were 26:1 - 34:1 was only in Vic I suspect where they need a premium top get anyone to bet on them.

And do you mind not saying that the Swans are shortening - could you get AFL clothing to suit anyone much smaller than our pair of Monty and Schneids?

I saw that today and cursed my tardiness for not putting down a lazy ten last week.

Pies are a huge threat. The core of their squad has got plenty of finals (and GF) experience, which makes a big difference at the business end (the lack of finals experience, plus the fact that they have no-one taller than 190cm who isn't in plaster, is why the Dogs can't do it). Plus they've got an extremely talented squad.

The contribution of injuries to Collingwood's performance last year was overstated. It was an absolutely pitiful effort with a quality list. I wouldn't use the phrase 'once they realised they weren't going to make the finals, they threw games in order to not pass the 5 wins mark and got an extra early draft pick', if only because I understand the laws of defamation. But they shoulda done a lot, lot better... and they'll do a lot, lot better this year. Thank god they're still Collingwood, which means that if they do make the GF, they'll almost certainly lose it.

I agree with most of what your saying, but in reality the Pies have still not beaten any of the perceived top 6 sides in the comp.

Still need to see how they will go away from Melbourne as well as they are likely to have to play interstate twice in a finals campaign to make a GF this year.
