Wilbur runs hot and cold while Ollie has lost form. None of our youngsters have shown much, though Sheldrick has stepped up and another positive is Wicks down back. Then there’s our awful set shots at goal- low confidence combined with questionable technique. All this explains our current ladder position, though in fairness we’re playing better with Mills, Errol and Paps back.

It seems that last year when Errol, Isaac and Chad were outstanding and we finished on top- that was our opportunity to win the flag. I’m still at a loss as to what happened on GF day- on paper we matched Brisbane. But that’s old hat now and it is obvious to me that we have a lot of work to do recruiting wise if we are to challenge again in the near future.
I think you are on the money here with your comments. In my opinion the reason we lost the grand final in the way we did is two fold. Again, for the second GF in a row, we played injured players ( McDonald and Heeny ) in 2022 it was Sam Reid. Secondly, when we had these injuries, we were totally unprepared as we had not exposed fringe players to see who could handle the pressure when we had the opportunity mid season with the philosophy that you don’t change a winning team. Cox appears to be more open to this.
Having said that, I don’t believe we would have beaten Brisbane, but we all expected a significantly better effort.
The other thing you have touched on is list depth which has been exposed this year which needs to have an even balance between development and experienced players.

One last, I share your concerns about Robert’s, but still hold hopes for Campbell

Yes that’s fair comment. We could have won a couple more and made us all feel better and possibly reach the finals. However, it would only have papered over some cracks- our bottom 4 players don’t contribute anywhere near enough- we lack another key forward, we are not strong enough in the air, rarely play a proper second ruck, and most games get beaten around clearances. Realistically, we can’t win a flag with the current team. This doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the rest of the season if we get our set shots right and play with the endeavour we’ve shown lately.

Predictable push from a Victorian club: Saints call for end to NSW, Qld Academies as part of draft overhaul.
