General footy chat Round 11: the other games.

It's probably a measure of how much Geelong @@@@ me these days, that I'll be going for the Bulldogs tonight. I mean, I've largely forgiven the Bulldogs for the 2016 free kick count, whereas, I find the deep suspicions that I have over Geelong's oversized salary sombrero, to be immensely irksome. Especially when it appears that the AFL has little interest in examining out of cap payments and the like.

Tomorrow night, I might tune in for the Dreamtime at the G presentation, and then make my mind up whether to watch the game or not.

I've tipped the Cats, I don't hate them but I still hate the Dogs......because they still get away with murder.

I have tipped them this season over lower sides though.

Never, re the Dogs. But agree re the Cats.

Apparently the Cats are handing out free headbands at the ground tonight to fans. Brilliant showmanship.

I'll be 6 foot under and as cold as a Siberian wind before I forgive the fairypuppies for 2016 :P Unless of course we beat them in a grand final due to horrendous umpiring errors - then I might forgive haha,

But yes, the salary sombrero down Geelong way also bugs me.

The last Sydney home game this year is against Geelong in round 23. If sombreros are permitted headwear at the ground, it's not too late for someone to get a few sombreros to wear to the game (best worn in a back row). Decorate them with a band that says "Geelong's salary cap".

Yes, you too can look like a twat.

Although, I'm a little surprised that the Bailey Smith headband is made by Nike, and not part of some Cotton On brand ambassadorship.

Like other posters, I'll never forgive the Poodles, either. Premierships are too hard to win without being cheated out of one. (I have tipped the Poodles to win in my work tipping comp but am happy to be proven wrong.)

Love the term "salary sombrero," deja! Laugh out loud when I read it. Is it your creation?

No, it's been around for years: mcs might have been the first one to use it on this site.

There’s about six players out there with headbands. It’s very confusing. Red hot first quarter though.

Extremely entertaining first quarter. 10 goals kicked and both teams on the attack.

I'm becoming increasingly irked by the conversations around the soft cap and the proposed solutions to address it.

I fully support more cap being available for all coaches in the league. I think it's accepted that assistant coaches have been dudded by the COVID-caused reductions being reversed for players (and, I suspect, for most senior coaches) but not for the rest of the football department. Ben Mathews, now a seasoned assistant coach, having to live away from his family in a squidgy, breeze-block apartment, because he can't afford to bring them all up to Sydney, is a blight on the competition.

But I take great issue with what seems to be the solution being spoken of the loudest of the senior coach's salary being excluded from the soft cap. This seems like an entirely anti-equalisation response to make the lives cushier (and more financially lucrative) for the most experienced, best paid senior coaches. If you're Chris Scott, Damian Hardwick or Alistair Clarkson, as examples, and your coaching record (and your sense of self-worth) means you demand (and receive) a high salary, you shouldn't need the same support as lesser senior coaches. If you're Dean Cox or Andrew McQualter, as examples, in your first year as a senior coach, still learning the ropes, it stands to reason that you either need more assistant coaches, or you need higher quality, more experienced assistant coaches to take the load off you somewhat. Excluding the senior coach's salary from the soft cap just creates a huge inequality in the clubs' soft caps, given the variation in senior coach salaries.

Why put this here? Probably not for a good reason. Except that I've been itching to unload on this topic for a while but am not sure if it warrants its own thread. So, because I perceive Chris Scott as one of the main agitators for this change, my dislike of the Cats increases even more. They've already tried to circumvent the soft cap and the impact of his salary by coming up with a "consultancy" scheme with a club partner that has all the hallmarks of Judd's Visy ambassadorial farce.

So the Cats (currently) sit right at the top of my "most disliked club" ladder.

                        Go Dogs!

I think there’s also a GWS assistant who lives in a caravan.

As well as all the valid points you make re assistants, there’s development. I think Norf are a garbage bunch of fans who deserve all the misery theiy deserve for what they did to Goodes in his final game, but the answer to their woes wasn’t a second round draft pick to trade for crap talent like Griffin Logue but an allowance for an extra development coach or two.

Tassie is apparently seeking an allowance for that, which is wise.

I get there’s a challenge to define who gets it and who doesn’t, but it’s sure better than an arms race on senior coach spending

Seems like the umpires have decided to compensate for the narrowness of the cattery, by allowing Geelong to mark out of bounds.

From fleeting glances, I'm trying to work out what the tattoo on the upper left arm of Liberatore is? It could be a drunken self portrait? It could be his mum? It could be one of The Three Stooges? It could be a tribute to the botched art restoration, known as the Monkey Christ?
