    Farce. Potentially disastrous.

...and can't do anything about it until the end of the year.

            What happened to Laidlaw?

I'm concentrating on this thread so that I can go to bed and not slit my wrists.

Will they bring Bevo back in for Mathews? Out of the fat into the fire if they do.

Missed the first quarter because they moved the game forward.

Doyle played the whole game at FF. Just plonked himself in the goalsquare where he was too big for his opponent. Obviously not ready to risk him in the ruck yet.

The usual suspects dominated again. Schmidt, Spriggs, Willoughby, Bevan, Vogels, Moore. I thought they last 3 played particularly well and should come into seniors contention. Dempster played at fullback and as you would expect by looking at the scoreline didn't have much to do. Roosy seems to have a soft spot for Bevan, I think we may see him in next week. Surprised to see Grundy kicked 6, he missed a fair few kickable set shots as well.

No idea what happened to Laidlaw. He and Ericksen were the only players not to play either seniors or reserves. Even saw a bit of Currie today. Edit: oops, Malceski was also missing.

                  My thoughts echo Ugg's.

Didn't realise Grundy had kicked so many. He must have got a few early - there were 4 goals on the board when I arrived.

The team did look a little rusty out there, as if the whole squad decided to pass on skills practice for the past fortnight, not just the senior team. What was telling in the end was their fitness level. Not that they were in danger of losing - they were 14 goals and a load of behinds ahead at 3/4 time. But it was the final term that became an absolute rout and made the scoreboard even more lopsided than the game really was. The Tigers pretty much stopped running at all, and the Cygnets did just as they pleased.

Vogels played well. I've seen him play better but he certainly did enough to put his name in front of the selection team for next weekend, particularly given what happened a couple of hours later.

Schmidt's game was probably the best I've seen him play. He looks overweight and is certainly no hare but he knows how to find the ball and his disposal was very sound and occasionally clever.

Moore was also good, and Spriggs was lively too. He seems to have improved his kicking significantly.

I agree with Ugg that Bevan is maybe the most likely to come in to the senior team though. It was a good, all round game from him, mainly in the forward line but working around the ground a bit too.

Doyle looks to be in good shape and he moved well and kicked well. Looked OK at ground level too.

Phillips had a quietish game but did a couple of very special things in the second half.

I thought Dempster was just so-so, given what you'd expect from him. Based purely on this game I'd probably have Vogels, Bevan, Schmidt and Moore ahead of him the queue, though I suspect that's not the way it will actually work out.

The ACTAFL is becoming even more of a farce of the highest order. The present setup will see us lose the younger players elsewhere, where they can get more meaningful Football.
At the very least a combined Sydney/ACTAFL comp, or ideally IMHO A South Melb VFL team under the control of Sydney.

Schmidt looks the goods as usual, just knows how to get in there and extract the ball out just like Moore does.

Phillips kicked a ripper goal off one step from distance in the last quarter....very very good find.

That was my first impression of Schmidt today as well, as I haven't seen the reserves for 2 months.

Thought young Barlow did some nice things playing in the backline

Everyone was lining up for potshots at the end.

Glenn: I believe they've arranged for the reserves to play a SFL select side next week (AFL Canberra bye week). It should be interesting to see what the result of that game is.

I really like Barlow. Can't quite put my finger on why, because at times he looks really gangly and clumsy. But at other times he looks to have a bit of an X-factor about him.

Don't worry, having got distracted while drafting her comprehensive post, Liz just forgot to add: "... before suffering a nasty knock to the knee late in the last quarter, which club doctors suspect is an ACL rupture".

PS Great news about the SFL representative team match. If it's a success (read: they get within 10 goals), we should try to arrange some more.
