To be honest, I wouldn't mind.
You cant have a team in the VFL called the Sydney Swans, but Swans reserves would be alright.
Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

      Why not, wasn't a problem in the early/mid 80's.

Couldn't care less what they're called as long as we start getting some decent competition for our reseves. Playing in the ACT league has become a disadvantage to the club.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Exactly, 8 years worth of a Sydney team in a VFL!

If we were to get a stand-alone team in the VFL to use for our Reserves Team, I would think the last thing to think about would be the Name. I wouldn't buy a "South Melbourne" VFL Membership on its own, rather I would just pick what games I go to (depending on the fixture and other events like you know the Swans Seniors playing at a different venue). If the club included it in the Membership package at extra cost I wouldn't be too fussed.

But the name is the last issue I think should be considered. For starters, where would the VFL team play (Sydney or Melbourne, and I believe it should be Sydney), the cost and coaching staff of the VFL team to help with junior development.

As for names, I doubt having Sydney Swans would be an issue for the VFL considering they have the Tasmanian Devils, so that open's the way for the club keeping the name (and keeping the anti-SM people happy) and basing the club and playing home games in Sydney at the SCG (but most like not as curtain raisers).

The name would have no bearing on my decision on NOT buying a membership.
              Once was, now elsewhere

Why not, the VFL includes a side from Tassie.

In the "to be honest - I don't really care" kind of way?
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

I've read over that a couple of times and I still don't quite get it
