    Swans sign new ruckman

    ... for the rookie list.

The Australian Football League has a new fairytale - Jake the Beanstalk.

After six months of secret training sessions, it can be revealed the Sydney Swans have activated a little known and rarely used clause to sign a skyscraping Brisbane teenager who has not played for a registered AFL club.

Jake Orreal, 18, who stands 205cm - 2cm taller than West Indian fast bowler Curtly Ambrose - has landed a two-year rookie list contract with the Swans despite playing only three games of Australian football.

    Another New Rookie

Along with the new Irish kid, we will have a secod rookie who has hardly played the game at all. I wonder how long he will be given - ruckmen traditionally take longer to mature and this kid is literally starting at square one. I guess 6'9" is not a bad starting point.

Good luck to the Beanstalk! 205cm pure athlete is not a bad start. Hope he manages to fill out unlike Ericksen.

That's pretty exciting actually. Hope it works out.

205cms, and he must be coming along alright.

He will share a Bondi residence with Swans Lewis Roberts-Thomson -- a rugby union convert -- and Paul Bevan, the grand nephew of former rugby league legend Brian Bevan.
That bit should start a 10 page thread on it's own.

You've obviously never read Bigfooty. We have a 93 page thread called the "roomies" all about LRT, Bevo and Auskick living together.

Because if we didn't find a way to trade him, delisting him would do nothing for our salary cap because he was still contracted.

                    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I was thinking more along the lines of "Mmm, here we have a kid who has NEVER played the game, who should he live with to learn the finer points of what it's all about, learn some silky skills and develop his decision making? I know, let's put him with LRT and Bevo !!!"

And you're right, I've never bothered reading BigFooty.

I visited once and from what I saw, a 93 page thread on "Oh my, guess who lives with who?" does not surprise me one bit.

Good news - and the other thing I really like about it is that we obviously have scouts operating all over, and are prepared to take a punt on a decent prospect.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
