Pretty much. What a waste, but i guess there was little choice with Eski out.

Goodesy needs to pull his @@@@ing finger out. Great in pre-season then turns to minced soup when it comes to the real stuff.

    Jude simply has to go.

Not that I dont think the umps got most of the calls right, but sometimes they get rather trigger happy. And it was a very harsh call on Mattner that free that led to Schneiders goal.
Any team that plays us surely must think that they go into the game with a 2 goal advantage. Some of the frees paid tonight where just awful and had Milne scored or got a 50 would have been murder.

But i don't like to blame the umpires for our loss..but they did their usual best in distracting me from watching and enjoying the game - again.

Yes, it's the marginal ones that have me ripping my hair out in clumps. The Saints got a lot more of them than we did. e.g. Richards touched Kozi's head and the ump paid a free. Yet in Barry Hall gets coathangered and nothing happens.

Thornton can replace Jude next season? Wishful thinking They need to put Barlow in Malceski's position, and just let Mattner carve it up on the wing. If Marty plays in defence all season, it's a wasted trade.

I didn't see the game at all, but I'll be happy when I know I'm never going to see Bevan, Grundy or Jude again (See Mathews & Crouch). One player that people haven't talked about is Jolly, how did he go?

                Or Milne drops a mark.

I am convinced that Barry needs his head ripped off before the umpires decide if they are going to pay a free kick and even then they will just simplly wave their hands in the air and wave "play on"

Did OK but just kept tapping anywhere and gave away a few silly frees in the first q.

                      wishful thinking but

                      In: Barlow
Spida (bit skeptic about his fitness)

                      Out: Jude Bolton
                      Grundy

Mattner to alternate with Barlow from wing and HBF. It gives Moore/Bird the starting spot and we get our second ruckman to handle Lade/Brogan.

Too many brain fades by too many players tonight. Unbelievable turnovers at crucial times. Thought Mattner was extremely stiff to give away that free. I don't see what the infringement was?????? He bumped him, that's all. Wasn't head high or anything. Dumb decision. Kicking at goal was the usual sub standard effort.

I'm no Davis fan, but why the hell would you take him off in the last minute when the game could have been won, and he is the most likely player to kick a goal from 50 if required. I dunno, that was absolutely MAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!

Very disappointed that we lost but if you had told me that we would lose by 2 points during the first quarter I think I'd have taken it.

I thought there was great fight and enthusiasm in the last 3 quarters...the usual lack of polish remains an issue but that was never going to change over a summer.

We lost by 2 points to the Saints on their home ground in round one...not too bad and puts us a little ahead of where we have been in previous years.

Round 1 doesn't give all the answers but compared to past years I feel happier...not wildly optimistic, but not too unhappy either.

Funnily enough...found the contest very enjoyable...good match to be at but can appreciate that it wouldn't have been up to much on the TV.

Given the bullish view of the Saints prospects, we should consider ourselves up there.
                          oh well, maybe next time......

I never thought the Saints were as good as the bookmakers seem to think, and tonight didn't change my opinion. Malceski would've made the difference, or some better umpiring.

Is it just me or do we get pinged for a lot of 50/50 calls, like the umpires have some preconceived ideas about us?

We might have only lost by 2 points, but I think we were rubbish tonight. The only reason we lost by only 2 points was that St Kilda were ALMOST just as rubbish Very nervous start to the season by both sides, and IMO a match that never really reached any great heights - so many errors!

In saying that, yes, we got a lot closer than I thought we would. And I am pretty pleased with a couple of the performances from some players:

                              - Kennelly - BOG for me. Gee we missed his attacking play from halfback early last year
                              - Jack - Very impressive as noted elsewhere
                              - ROK - Lead strongly, and can take a mark, unless some of our other key forwards....
                              - Craig Bolton - Undersized again, but never really out of the contest.
                              - LRT - Showed a lot tonight - it is no coincidence that the players that did well were the ones who attacked the footy and played positively

We'll see. I never put a lot of stock into the round 1 performance, and this year is no different.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

The free was paid because Mattner attacked the player too hard. It was an appalling decision, as was the final two decisions where hall and kotschizke were both tackled off the ball in similar ways but the home crowd umpring ensured that the swans missed on both.

The fundamental things about Roos game plan remain. We are hard to score against and we struggle to score. Games become attritional where the other side can't get players free - a good comparison point is collingwood where their defenders move the ball too fast for us.

Hard to blame goodes for being uninvolved. He was being dragged out of the play all of the time.

As usual some classic mistakes - there wouldn't have been too many players that didn't turn the ball over tonight. But basically a very poor game where umpiring was of the same standard as much oif the play.
