Walls and comments on style of play.

I am not sure if I am being over-sensitive but listening to Robert Wall's comments during the Essendon/Collingwood and previous Essendon games this year, he harps on the fact that it is entertaining to watch and not like the style of game that only scores 10/12 goals.(I am presuming he means us and Adelaide)
He did mention that Essendon lose as it is a Russian roulette style but this doesn't seem to matter. Would the Essendon supporters be happier if they won with lower amounts of goal kicking??

It is really giving me the gripes.

Most supporters want their team to win, but they also want to be entertained at the football. Nearly every supporter of nearly every club I have met enjoys free-flowing, hard tackling, high scoring games. Watching games when teams score 8 or 9 goals, force a lot of stoppages and kick it sideways does not appeal to most supporters.

The way we play footy is absolutely fine by me as long as we keep winning...well, we don't have to keep winning, but as long as I can see that we are going somewhere as a club!

As for Wallsy, just don't listen to him, I swear he goes away. If you do have to listen to him, however, just laugh at most of the crap he dishes up. He is a washed up hack who has to keep his job somehow, so he delivers verbal diarrhea on a weekly basis.

Yeah, I loved watching last years grand final. So much better to watch than 2005 and 2006.

That could have something to do with the participants...

Most spectators would rather see more goals kicked than less.

Last year's GF and today's game are boring because one side is getting flogged, not because a lot of goals are kicked.

There have been some fanstically enthralling shoot-outs and some engrossing lock-downs. There have also been plenty of @@@@ boring examples of both.

What frustrates me the most is commentators' obsession with what "style" is attractive and what isn't. What I reckon most supporters find entertaining is a genuine contest.

(Oh, and even if people find Essendon's current approach to game plan "entertaining" it ain't going to get them close to a premiership without some major modifications. Indeed, it will be surprising if it gets them many more wins this year, even when they do get the likes of McVeigh back into the team.)

i find the constant stops in play for rubbish umpire decisions more boring than any teams game plan

LIke they say, a good forward line wins memberships, a good backline wins premierships.

Absolutely, but all other things being equal, most people would prefer a game where a team wins 18 goals to 17 rather than 8 goals to 7.

If you are just looking at winning as being entertaining I'm sure most supporters would prefer to win 20 goals to 10 rather than 10 goals to 5.

If you are winning then I suspect you will still lose supporters if you are winning 5 goals to 1.

Yes, and that was my point above about the closeness of the games. But they also enjoy the spectacle, and kicking goals is more of a spectacle than ball ups or sideways chip kicks.

I think it was more a case of the first quarter being entertaining. Until they can add some better defensive and pressure skills, they won't win many games and many of their full games will not be entertaining.

Variety is the spice of life. I like the mixed bag we play.

Absolutely. And if every team played in the same way, footy wouldn't be nearly as interesting, nay intriguing, as it often is. It is fascinating watching different approaches to the game grapple with each other and to see which one comes out on top.

Personally I find the number of goals kicked in a game to be a minor part of whether it's a good game or not.
