Rugby league has always had a loyal but limited following, mainly restricted to blue collar, working class men and their sons. That never made for big crowds and is a declining demographic. On the other hand, rugby union is very much a private school game and naturally exclusive, so the average person does not feel welcome, hence club rugby has virtually neglible support compared to league. Soccer in Sydney has been dominated for ages by specific ethnic groups, which puts off everyone else. And the AFL (whether it realises this or not) has basically been targeting people who feel they don't fit in with any of the above - "middle Australia"

Throw in mortgage stress, the cost of petrol and the cost of living in general, and that might help explain why Sydney doesn't have the sporting crowd culture seen in the AFL states.
Rugby League used to be huge back in the 50s and 60s, but it is not a genuine international game - although better than AFL in this respect ATM. It is also a very limited game in terms of play patterns.
Rugby Union was, and I think still is, played in a lot of state schools, but although it is an international game and growing, it is more fun to play than to watch, especially when 10-man rugby takes over.
Soccer is succeeding in getting rid of its ethnic albatross, is THE international game and is much more serious competition for AFL than the other two, despite too often being as frustrating as Sydney v St Kilda at their worst.
AFL is not yet an international game and if I were running the show I would be working harder on this than trying to get a Western Sydney team going.

No, but the NRL clubs aren't propped up by their governing body either AFAIK.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not,but the commentators were commenting on how little the teams were not running and carrying the ball, and were alluding to a poor surface.

From memory i think they said they were really giving it a lot of water.?

On one occasion Goodes just didnt look like he wanted to bounce the ball,so instead just gave it off which was the wrong option.

On another occasion i noticed Goodes bounced the ball and it came up to waist height no problem, but the next time it did it in the same sort of area it hardly made his knee caps.

...some times he does stupid runs but also does some very useful ones as well.I think he seems to excel when when there is no Tiger or Melcho.

I think playing against a bunch of kids helped a lot of our players play good games, which is why I wouldn't read a huge amount into the result.

And when you think about it only really did it for 2 halves each of the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Our first half was pretty much like our 2nd quarter against the Dogs.

We dominated the first quarter, although wasted opportunities, and that arguably set us up for the Essendon comeback by not taking them seriously. We didn't get going again until the last 5 minutes of the third qtr. The last qtr didn't mean a lot given Essendon collapsed, as it has done a lot this year.

We played so well from about the 18 minute mark of the 3rd quarter because the game plan changed. Instead of taking the usual indirect route around the boundary we took it down the centre corridor instead, backed our forwards to mark the ball, kicked the ball to our leading forwards in the area in front of goal instead of the pockets, making it easier for our forwards to kick goals, and even kicking them from outside 40 metres. MORE PLEASE!!

I dont agree that the game plan changed.

Simple explanation is that we dominated the clearances from that point onwards.
