    Qualifying Final 2005

Can someone tell me the name of the Eagles player who was standing on the mark and faked being hit by Leaping Leo in the last quarter of the final at Subi in 2005. The ball was taken off us, given to them, they got a goal - the decision cost us the game and would have cost a lesser team the Premiership. I only saw the incident once on a news program the next day and, amazingly, the 2005 Highlights DVD doesn't include the incident.

He wasn't standing on the mark, he was running past chasing a player (wasn't he?) and he didn't fake it, Leo actually hit/bumped him.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Shouldn't of been a free kick though.

Stenglein came off the mark and bumped into Leo who was innocently running past.

Then aout 30 seconds later Wirrpanda tackled Goodes around the ankles when he didn't have the ball and the umpire called play on.

It's alright, we got revenge in the 2006 qualifying final.

              Yes he was.

Leo was running behind the mark, possibly to make position to receive a handball and play on. Stenglein moved back and across from the mark and initiated contact.

Mightn't be the worst free kick in history, but it's in the final.

                I wouldn't change a single thing about 2005.

Had we not been "robbed" in that game, we'd never have witnessed Nick Davis coming to Savis. And then we'd probably have been rolled by the Crows in the PF.

Ironically the winning of the qualifying finals, (as well as winning the Brownlow for that matter), in 2005 and 2006 proved to be a curse.

That said, one of the greatest feelings ever in following the Swans was turning up at the Irish Club at Subi the night we beat the Eagles in the QF in 2006 in Perth. What a night of celebration, particularly for those long suffering WA Swans fans. I was so happy that I remember out of pure instinct giving Richard Colless a hug as he walked into the club through the front door.

How could you forget? I refer to it in nearly every discussion I have with WCE supporters as "The Stenglein Decision" as an example of appallingly bad umpiring. (The ump was dropped from the the rest of the finals).

A free that has never been paid before or paid since.

At that game SS were 14 or 15 points in front in the last quarter. LRT had a brain fade and short-chipped one to Hunter who goaled and then the "Stenglein" decision. The whole momentum of the game changed to WCE's favour. More annoying Adam Goodes was tripped by Wirrpanda in the last few minutes while running to goal. An obvious free - but no way would it get paid in front of the howling parochial mob at Subi.
