Geelong Round 20-Do the Swans have ANY hope?

With the Swans' recent form now on the board, (4 comfortable losses and 2 very narrow wins against bottom 8 sides), do they have any chance at all of victory against the Cats in Round 20 at Homebush?

For my part I haven't been so pessimistic about a Swans' victory since at least the 2003 Port Adelaide Qualifying Final, (to which Sydney famously won). Before that game, you would have to go back in my mind to an SCG game against Essendon in Round 14 2000,(to which Sydney led by 12 at 3/4 quarter time and only lost eventually by 13)

Seriously though, we put up a good show against the Cats back in Round 5 at Skilled Stadium, when the club was reeling after Hall's king-hit to Staker the previous week. We went with them for the whole game bar the last 10 minutes.

The key for us will be successfully disrupting Geelong's high-possession game.

Yes we do. We match up on them well. The key is our midfield. Jude is in rare form, Kirky is Kirky and young Bird is really adding something. And of course the emergence of Mc Veigh as a Rolls Royce mid. The Hall and Goodes forward line will trouble the scragger. Put the Bevonator on Ablett and choke him out of the match. If we can sustain the physical pressure we have a real show. Bring the pussies on i say.

We deserve rank underdog status, however we are a chance if we go in confident we can win.

A small addition to our chance of success was Geelong's game against the Dees.

I wouldnt say that they had a good hit out on Friday night, their intensity wasn't tested and I am hoping that works in our favour.

Also, I don't think Ablett looked right. At one point, I thought he just favoured that ankle a little. It was subtle, but I think he's a chance to be rested again this week. Why would you risk him?

i think if we play with attack and a dare to win to attitude we have a chance, we may get flogged, but we wont win trying to lock down geelong and play stoppages etc.

agreed, think we will have to play them at their own game, only slowing the tempo down if it is desperately needed, skills have definatly improved, and I think the only chance we have is to fight fire with fire. that being said we played well when we first played the cats this year with a shutdown plan but got blown away in the last quarter. that being said we didnt attack enough in that game to put real pressure even though the scores were pretty close at 3/4 time.

but yeah, forward pressure and going through the corridor is our best chance

I can't remember the year but we had a really depleted lineup a few years back (Eade era) against Essendon at the SCG and really took it to them until the last quarter before Essendon moved away and won.

That type of gutsy performance is all I am after this week, we have a reputation for being tough and I just want them to show that.

However Geelong have been talking about how concerned they are with surface at ANZ Stadium for a while, so maybe they're talking themselves out of a good performance.

Watch those caps! But yes, I have to agree that sometimes those types of wins can have a positive effect on a side. Let's hope it has a great effect on the boys and they take it up to Geelong.
