    How Many Will Leave?

Heard today that the Swans are currently planning for eight blokes to either retire or be cut this year. Another hint in the composition of the ressies team for the Grannie - most of the "fringe" players, Grundy, Brennan and co missed out on the team. Seems that plenty of cards have been marked. If so, can't say I disagree.

    Retired - Everitt, Mathews
Perhaps will retire? - Barry, Crouch
    Gone - Brennan
Decision time - Fosdike, Schmidt, Davis, Grundy, Ablett, Thornton, Laidlaw?

Will be very interesting to see what they do with regards to the rookie list - Smith, O'Dwyer and Murphy all have claims for a promotion.

Those 8 players may include rookie delistings. Given the pressure on rookie list spots and the restrictions on retaining them, I'll be surprised to see Beckmans or Terlich get a second year. Bruce I'm a big rap for, though I know others on here are more agnostic. I reckon he'll get another year.

I'll also be surprised to see Grundy go. With a lack of developing talls, especially ones who can slot into the senior team now, he represents important depth if nothing else. And I still reckon he has the potential to become more than just depth. Him missing out on playing today could be as simple as giving the chance to those guys who've played most of their season in the twos, rather than bumping them for someone who's played relatively few games.

Brennan, Fossie and Laidlaw were all injured regarding the Ressies final. Though two of the three could be delisted/traded.

But If the 8 include rookie delistings, it'll be interesting to see which players are elevated to the seniors list, etc.

As Liz said, we need Grundy because we're lacking talls, unless Roos and co, conjure up a plan to go for broke at trade time, he might get chopped.

Media down here, reckon they are awaiting the imminent announcement on those two.

there was also mention in the Herald yesterday that there are a number of players who are ready to walk from the Swans as they are sick of the place. If its true, wonder who they might be.

As I have never been a fan of the leadership group - maybe the treat them like naughty school kids approach by the group may have worn a bit thin on some.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

I know it has with a number of us supporters, imagine how it must be with the playing list.

I guess the "us" and "them" scenario is now being played out.

If the "them" had a vote, I reckon all of the "us" would be gone. It all smacks of school yard bullying. "You do what we want or you don't get a game."

                    Retire Or Delist

I think these players should retire or be delisted. Spida has already retired so I shall proceed to the others. Leo Barry, Nick Davis, Nic Fosdike, Ben Matthews, Henry Playfair, LRT & Tim Schmidt. Firstly Leo, he has been a wonderful player for us but as he ages his decission making is getting worse not better & he ain't getting any faster. Nic Fosdike hardly spent any time on the park this year & as happens to some players as they age he has become injury prone. Davis gave us a few good years but has an attitude problem. It is obvious that Benny so injury free for so long is now injury prone & has trouble keeping up with the small forwards. Henry Playfair is the worst buy we have had for a long time, the Cats knew he was injury prone & he doesn't take the strong contested mark indicative of a gun tall forward. LRT is not strong enough to play a key position & is just a journeyman, makes too many mistakes. Tim Schmidt just hasn't made it, a pity cos he has plenty of grunt & hardness just not enough talent. while Martin Mattner has been quite good this year he has a habit of undoing his good work with poor delivery or bad decission making. Maybe a new role for him next year, he was a reasonably good midfielder/small forward early in his career. Ed Barlow & Luke Brennan must also be close to delisting.

Definite Retired - Everitt and Mathews
Possible Retired - Barry and Crouch

Delisted / Traded - Davis, Beckmans, Terlich, Brennan

That is 8 players, and possibly a likely scenario?

At the same time, the Swans must wrestle with the delicate decision of whether to give co-captain and premiership icon Leo Barry another year. It is believed Barry is eager play on, while some at match committee level are less enthusiastic.

It seems Leo has different ideas about his retirement ...

the retirements will more than likely be announced at the Best & Fairest dinner, so anyone on here going to it this year?

I personally think that if Leo wants to play another year - he should. Even if we only got 10 or so games out of him that would be ok. Since coming back from his hamstring injury (Except for the Collingwood game) I think he has been quite good and I also thought he looks a bit quicker. Seems to have dropped some weight. I am also concerned as to who takes over his position. I like C Bolts playing in the back pocket/CHB and same with LRT. Would not really be a good "bloods" culture if they delist their captain and the longest servant at the club with Micky O. Most clubs let their long-term players retire when they want to. Maybe then, if Leo plays on next year, swans will be able to recruit or train someone up for full back.

I think Crouch, Fossie, Spida, Davis, Mathews gone although I think Crouch and Fossie have another year of their contract. As to who we trade really depends on who the other clubs want. Would not want to see Fossie/Crouch stay and Leo go. Must admit Leo is one of the my favourites and I know from this site, that he cops a bit so I am sure people will disagree. But obviously he is a captain for a reason and quite respected.

One more thing - The Swans would have known Spida was retiring - why not let him have a Tribute match? Same with Leo? Not much dignity shown there.
