    AFL plans for Sydney Showground

This would be the second major investment by the AFL in Homebush (the first was providing funds for the configuration of ANZ Stadium).

I would be intrigued to see the result of re-configuring the Sydney Showground. It would probably become quite an attractive little venue. I would certainly pay a visit to check out the finished product.

Given that it is already used by the Sydney AFL comp I think it is a good idea. I hope it is built in such a way that it could be easily expanded up to about 40,000 in the future.

      Thinking about the future? Never!

Nah, is good news. I worry about permanent translocation from Blacktown to Homebush, but I wouldn't be a cynic if I didn't

I was one of the first to suggest The Showground for the second team.

What I am concerned about is the SCG Trust's plans to tear down the historic MA Noble and Bradman stands.

You are kidding aren't you? They are death traps.

What is historic about them? Just because something is old doesn't make it of historical significance.

The showground would be more intimate or atmospheric but it would still be in the middle of a heartless concrete wasteland which won't help the team build any sort of community or 'home'. If the present Blacktown proposal can seat 10000 why not expand that (admittedly I've got no idea what that's like either!).

Good point! Lets also get the Romans to knock down that old eye sore, the colosseum.

Thank you, you proved my point. By your lack of an answer, you are saying that there is nothing historical about those stands, otherwise you would have been able to explain the historical significance of them.

The Colosseum on the other hand has evidence to back up that it is a site of historical significance, as is the Forum, and many of the other historical sites I saw in Rome.

Could you explain why certain buildings are heritage listed?

Again you haven't answered the question as to why these stands are of historical significance. Buildings are heritage listed because they are of historical significance, not because they are old.

Now, if you could answer my original question, why are these two stands of historical significance? My guess is you have no idea, so you continue to avoid answering it.

You've answered your own question. They are of historical significance, just like the old score board.

IIRC, the old scoreboard behind the Doug Walters Stand was moved off site, but not destroyed. I may have crossed wires there.

The Bradman and Noble are just big old-fashioned stands named after some truly great cricket players. My only hesitation in tearing them up is that the Trust might eventually go down the path of the MCC and tear down the beautiful, heritage listed Member's and Ladies Pavilions.

Here's a guide to the history of the various stands at the SCG.

You could hardly call the Bradman Stand "historic" as it was built in 1973. And the M.A. Noble Stand, constructed in 1936, isn't particularly significant either.

In fact, the history of the SCG has been one of perpetually building stands and pulling them down at a later date.

Both the Noble and Bradman stands were built prior to the words "risk management" ever being muttered. The thing is that very little has been done to them since their original construction and they are an accident waiting to happen..

The Members and Ladies stands, even though they are older, have been reasonably maintained in accordance with heritage guidelines, also you only have to look at them to see why they have heritage listing. The others are an eyesore.

I think when the time comes for that reconstruction I will change my membership to "supporter" so as to save my number - because whilst the game on the pitch will probably be good, the actual trip getting there and into the ground will be a bun fight.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................
