Rhyce Shaw....dud pickup?

Rhys Shaw has been possibly the best pick up of the year for any club. He has provided run, drive and pace of the backline that we would have been lacking with the departure of Tadgh.

Your post, IMO is very very harsh!

His positives for us has far outweighed the negatives.

It was a surprise Shaw stayed at Collingwood. It was an awful gaff. Did he not learn from that incident? He is now doing the same thing at Sydney. He has been given a bit of a boost by the media and I truly think it has gone to his head. He tried it on several times against West Coast and invariably stuffed it up every time. And who appointed him the general of the backline? He gets the ball meanders around, changes direction as if he owns the place. Surely he is the junior in terms of seniority?. Craig Bolton and then Mattner should be the generalissimo's back there. Get back in your place Shaw! Cut out the fancy stuff and just get on with it. Grab a brain.

General Shaw? Don't think so, he's just a man with a lot of pace and an ever improving punching deep kick (with a slight left bending arc), And some confidence.

Man with pace and an extending kick, who seems to thrive on being given the ball to run with, they should have had the GPS on him Sat night, I reckon he would have run miles, his disposal could do with a little more accuracy, but most of our blokes make those type of errors at some point, I suppose when u r runing the ball out of defence and make a blunder that results in a turnover u pay. And people notice more, if our skills delivering to the forwards were better we would kick a lot more goals, but people are not so harsh on midfielders poor delivery into the forward 50 because u usually have time to regroup and get players behind the ball. No, Shaw has been a good pickup for us, mainly because of his speed, and apparebt work ethic

What a ridiculous argument.

He's been a terrific pick up for us. A Swan with genuine pace who can break the lines is rare thing indeed.

I totally agree with you Matt.

It seems to me that the Shaw bashers on this site can't see past their entrenched hatred of Collingwood. Sure, he has the occassional disposal clanger and on Sat night he had a few that were costly. But he also rated amongst our highest in disposals and many were spot on. During the 2nd quarter I actually commented to a mate that he has been the perfect replacement for Kennelly and consequently, we havent missed Kennelly at all.

Actually most times I just sigh and say "sadly, he's one of the better kicks in the side". He will run, carry and kick - and WILL occasionally turn it over. To have the first three, you have to accept the 4th.

The bashers have been quite all year on bagging Shaw (because there was nothing to say), he makes a couple of minor errors and all of the sudden he's a dud pick up. There's some strange people round these parts.

Shaw is a great player for our purposes. You have to start from the position that unless you have several years of #1 draft picks or win the lotto in a once-in-a-decade way (a la Goodes), you're not going to get players who win contested footy, run like the wind, have beautiful disposal and outstanding instincts and decision-making skills.

It was far more important for Sydney to acquire a quick player who is prepared to take risks, create and break the lines at the cost of the odd turnover or dodgy decision-- rather than a reliable plodder.

What appears to be true is that Shaw ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. I get The Fear when I see that look in his face where he's trying to think. Then I feel pretty sure something's going to go wrong. He's definitely one of those players who should run entirely on instinct; quite frankly, we have to just cop on the chin the fact that a minority of the time he's gonna mess it up.

I'm not sure about this Rhys Shaw bloke but Rhyce Shaw has been great for the Swans. He's got the run and carry from the backline and more importantly, he's hitting targets with his kicking (at least more often).

Wow, not sure how to reply to this.

He is so exciting to watch off the half back line and we would be in serious trouble this year if he wasn't recruited.

He may even win our best and fairest....I don't believe we have a thread about him being a dud pickup, I truly thought this was a joke.

It was a great pickup by Lynch after Shaw squibbed it, but that's in the past. Shaw's been one of our best on the field much like Mattner was last year (and this year) and I'll reiterate, it's a stupid thread.

The thing about Shaw's disposal is that usually it is pin-point. It's not like he's just an average kick all the time. His disposal when he doesn't screw it up is absolutely fantastic, and I'd say the best in our team. The problem is that occasionally, and more often than is typical, he gets his ball drop wrong, or something else happens, and he comes up with a serious clanger.

His disposal is normally fantastic, he just has a higher clanger ratio than most players. And I'm more than willing to look past that, given the positives. He runs and runs and runs, and his kicking when he gets it right is VERY damaging. I do want to see him at least tried in the middle, but he's being very effective across half back.

We would not be where we are on the laddder without Shaw.I think Saturday night he had a couple of bad clangers but the bloke is human.He is definately our "recruit of the year" and I'd love a dollar for every time he's brought the ball forward from the backline.He's not a Collingwood player any more so we like him now as he's a SWANNIE and a bloody good one at that!!!!!!!
