The best ruckman of the Sydney era?

I obviously missed the best of Stafford. I became a Swannie fan the last year or so he was at the Swans and wasn't too impressed - he either seemed to be injured more often than not or looked as though he wasn't trying (probably because he was carrying injuries). Hard to judge between Ball and Jolly. I thought Ball was great, so dependable at being in the right place at the right time - but Jolly has played some great games and his goal kicking has been amazing.

While I would not nominate them, don't forget Mike Pyke, I have hopes for him (plus he's nice), Gareth John, Tim Barling, Glen Coleman (the only player to play 50+ games for 3 VFL clubs!), Tony Smith (may not have made his mark as a player, but as a business man he dominated for a while), Paul Chambers
, Ricky Mott
, and the luckless David Willis

You forgot that bloke who went home to Southport, Green wasn't it? He was worth a bit.
My money is on Jason. He worked hard. Showed Jolls how to.
Lets hold this thread in abeyance for a year and see what happens. If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

While it's debatable whether he's the best of the era (as he was already 32yoa when the era began), he did play 70 games for Sydney (as opposed to South Melbourne), so he should at least be in the list. In 1982 he collected 15 Brownlow votes to finish =6th in the count, following on from his (shared) Brownlow win in 1981.
My recollection of the Sunday arvo televised games when I was a kid, is that Barry Round was a colossus and a real standout in a Sydney side largely lacking them. Admittedly, he must have played up front a fair bit as he got older because in 1984 he played 15 games for 28 goals.Comment

You may find it more of a case Simon that in that era the ruckmen actually rested in the forward pocket rather than on the bench. While it's debatable whether he's the best of the era (as he was already 32yoa when the era began), he did play 70 games for Sydney (as opposed to South Melbourne), so he should at least be in the list. Jason Ball showed Jolls how to do it, very underrated player...as for not dominating u all have a very short memory.. Jason Ball was terrific and I agree with whoever said that we would have won in 06 with him!! Very upset to see Jolly go, he has become one of the best ruckmen in the comp, bitter its to the Magpies but good luck to him.... not too much though lol.Comment
