The commentary in general towards non victorian teams has been disgraceful this year, in fact the AFL in the last couple of years has reverted back to being a VFL comp with a few invited interstate sides.

The whole AFL media puzzles me, because for a code that wants to expand in a tough market like GWS they need to drop the vic biased, especially in a city like Sydney. You cannot have the AFL media pamper exclusivly to Melbourne footy fans as all that will do is hurt the code more than actually do it any good.

Melbourne footy fans are weird, they want the game to expand past their parochial borders, but as soon as anyone non victorian, let alone from Sydney, shows any real passion or interests they are pigeon holed. A case of dam if you do and dam if you don't!

Also the media just runs with the sydney stereotype. I am sick and tired of listening to these ill informed mesicans saying we just basically flood all day, while teams like collingwood play a "forward press" which sounds a lot better than flooding. I am also fed up with the buzz words.."the cluster" "the forward press" which is basically zone flooding.

Though flooding was not used as much if at all yesterday.

[QUOTE=ugg;534220]Powell played a few games. I should know, being a card-carrying member of his bandwagon (yet another derailed one)

I'm just sick of all their inside jokes and sniggering. Even Bruce has got in on the act, he made some reference to his "Special" call within the commentary yesterday. How meta[/QUOTE

I missed that but i did hear him reference his "delicous" call. He was talking about Yarran, i think.

He made a stupid comment about almost using delicious but stopped himself. I too am sick of all the banter between them all.

I want to listen to the game..not the in jokes!

It started getting a bit much when Bruce was talking how it made you want to barrack for Carlton. Fair enough to praise the game style, but they started getting way over the top.

Still, if Sydney hadn't played so dismally, we wouldn't have had to worry about that...

When I put on the soccer it is a breath of fresh air because they stay with the wide shot 80% of the time. Should be the same in Aussie Rules - I want to know what's happening upfield, and whether there's anyone to kick to! But no, they flick to the close up shot as soon as someone takes position, you see them kick, then it flicks briefly to a wide shot before going for the close one again. And then they change to the ground-level camera or the behind-the-goal camera, and it takes you a second to work out which way is which... it's rubbish.
I couldn't agree more. For a game which is so much about what happens off the ball, the way they broadcast it is the reverse of how they should do it. I realise today's technology allows very close-in shots in impressive detail but they should really be the replays rather than the main action. Instead, it's the other way around.

I just can't stand watching either channel 7 or 10 coverage.
Its either bruce and dennis or Robert (the pessimist) Walls or Luke (Dumb ass) Darcy.

The only time i have ever heard Wallsy say something positive is during carlton games.
Luke Darcy is just plain hopeless know's little if anything about the game and provides no insight.
Bruce and Dennis are just plain useless and senile.
+ We get it on delay so they can have a replay of a match back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Anyways just an angry rant of what i think of the free to air coverage.

I was particularly annoyed with the call as well. Hero worshipping everything Carlton did. But then again anything was going to annoy me because we were losing so badly. I used to turn the sound down and listen to the radio broadcast but that's stuffed now because the TV vision is about 5 or 6 seconds behind the radio call.....so you hear the goal kicked or missed well before you see it. It's all to do with the timing difference of the analogue radio signal v the TV digital signal.

The other funny thing in some of those games back then was how, every so often, the play would end up on a little patch of grass for a few seconds.

I agree with all the comments made here.

The only other thing I would add is that there is almost zero mention of stats during the game and no attempt to analyse the play.

Commetti is trying too hard to be funny - and its falling very flat, Bruce is an idiot who is also trying humour - just stick to your nerdy excercise book full of Stats Bruce and can it..
I'm finding that I would rather listen to Richo try and string a sentence together than the others. but together as a group they all still have out of body experiences when they see Judd get the ball - even if he turns it over, they are still in raptures about him - it really does give me the @@@@s!
Sadly I cant find ABC radio coverage for Sunday games here (if there is a channel please let me know) and Triple M's commentary is about 4 seconds behind the play on the teve.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Great point and one I have never seen any footy pundit mention. If the game is going boldly new territories then the TV commentary should also make some brave changes.

For Swans and GWS coverage, make the focus on NSW footy, including some coverage of Swans and GWS reserves games.

Make the coverage livelier and pacier like League commentary. Get some Sydney/NSW sports or media people to commentate. Bring in local coaches from other sports - league, rugby, soccer, basketball - for special comments.

Ban from NSW AFL games Bruce and Dennis and anyone who's been commentating for more than a dozen years and replace them with some young callers who are not recently-retired AFL players.

Problem is AFL has a parochial culture which assumes that the whole world cares about who won the 1954 premiership andhow many goals Gary Ablett kicked. The chance of Channel Seven Melbourne tailoring their games coverage to NSW audiences is about as great as Izzie winning the Coleman.
