VFL Round 14: Tuggeranong Hawks v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL Round 14
Tuggeranong Hawks v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 2nd July 2011 2.00pm
    Greenway Oval

Canberra Road Trip! It's just the 3rd one for the year, with the other 2 games both ending in 50 point victories. Tuggeranong have been the most improved side in the Eastern Conference for 2011, with the young core group of players maturing into a cohesive and hardworking unit.

    Eastern Conference Ladder

    Past Meetings
    2011
    R5 Reserves 18.15 (123) defeated Tuggeranong 1.6 (12)
Constant wet weather in the days preceding this game saw it shifted from the SCG out to the adjacent Lakeside Oval but this disruption did not affect the Reserves winning form. Tuggeranong forced numbers back early and combined with the rain the Reserves could only kick 1 goal in the first quarter. However, a shift to a man-on-man strategy and intermittent relief in the weather saw the Reserves stamp their class to run away with another comfortable victory. Trent Dennis-Lane kicked 5 late goals to top the goalscoring list. Byron Sumner was a class above in the wet with defenders Lewis Johnston and Chris McKaigue helping keep the Hawks to just a solitary goal.

Goals: Dennis-Lane 5 Lamb Murphy Gordon 2 Currie Robinson Roberts-Thomson McNeil Haren Kruger Seaby
Best: Sumner, Johnston, McKaigue, Gordon, Seaby, Thompson, Murphy

    2010
    R5 Tuggeranong 22.12 (144) defeated Reserves 13.13 (91) @ Greenway Oval
A depleted Swans side of only 12 listed players and 20 in total fell away in the last quarter to suffer their only loss to date. Trent Dennis-Lane led the way with 3 goals while Campbell Heath, Daniel Currie and Dylan McNeil were named as the Swans' best players

Goals: Dennis-Lane 3 Playfair Johnston Potter Dickerson 2 Heath
Best: Heath, Currie, McNeil, Playfair, Dickerson, Veszpremi

    R8 Reserves 28.12 (180) defeated Tuggeranong 11.6 (72) @ Greenway Oval
A last-minute change of venue due to the inclement weather proved no obstacle for the Reserves, who steamrolled the disappointing Hawks. Top-up player Kieran Emery had a day out with 8 goals, followed by Trent Dennis-Lane with 5 and Lewis Johnston 4. Sam Reid, Dylan McNeil and Pat Veszpremi were named as the Swans' best players.

Goals: Emery 8 Dennis-Lane 5 Johnston 4 Meredith Barlow 3 Gordon 2 Gilchrist McGlynn Lynch
Best: Reid, McNeil, Veszpremi, Johnston, Gordon, Emery

    R12 Reserves 20.20 (140) defeated Tuggeranong 9.6 (60) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
A strong first quarter where the Reserves kicked 7 goals to none set up an emphatic victory. Jesse White provided a fantastic aerial display and was rewarded with 8 goals. Sam Reid, in the absence of Daniel Currie, excelled in the ruck for the first time while Lewis Jetta turned on the style and speed in a very impressive second half.

Goals: White 9 Johnston 3 Emery Veszpremi Sumner Jetta 2 Robbie
Best: Reid, Jetta, Gordon, White, Sumner, McKaigue

    R16 Tuggeranong 10.7 (67) defeated Reserves 8.11 (59) @ Greenway Oval
A very disappointing loss by the Reserves who led at each break only to fall away to a fast finishing Hawks outfit. The team dominated for most of the match but found it hard to break a congested Hawks defence. There were 8 separate goalkickers with Daniel Currie, Gary Rohan and Sam Reid the best for the Reserves

Goals: McNeil Rohan O'Dwyer Veszpremi Reid Meredith Gordon Dickerson
Best: Currie, Rohan, Reid, Sumner, McKaigue

    Last Round
    Reserves 33.22 (220) defeated Queanbeyan 5.2 (32)
A weakened Queanbeyan side, debuting a new coach and a few youngsters, were no match for a disciplined outfit. Trent Dennis-Lane ran riot in the first half with 8 goals, before ending with 9 while Nathan Gordon and Matthew Spangher also had days out with 7 and 6 goals respectively. Jarred Moore set the tone early with his forward half tackling and distribution while Luke Parker won plenty of ball in the midfield

    Goal Kickers: Dennis-Lane 9 Gordon 7 Spangher 6 Moore 3 E.Moody Sumner 2 Parker A.Moody Currie Pyke
Best Players: Gordon, Moore, Parker, Spangher, Currie, Sumner

Tuggeranong had the bye last week so let's look at the previous week's game.
    Queanbeyan 10.13 (73) defeated by Tuggeranong 17.14 (116)
A classic 8-pointer, the Tigers' loss ensured they surrendered their top 4 spot to the rising Hawks. The Tigers held a 6 point lead at half time but were poor in the second half, kicking only 4 goals in response to the Hawks' ten.

Goal Kickers: Ghirardello Pocock Masters 4 Smith Lamb 2 Kickett
Best Players: Cleaver Smith Masters Robinson McCabe Lovett

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
In: Meredith (non-playing senior emergency), Rohan (knee), Johnston (Senior demotion)
Out: Luke Parker (Senior promotion), Lewis Jetta (Senior promotion), Campbell Heath (?), Mike Pyke (What the?)

Pyke's setback will be a blow to the big fella's chances of a late season recall as Seaby is doing well in his spot. Of more immediate concern is who will be backing up the Crusher in the ruck this week. I hope Nipper has spent a few sessions with the ruck coach Steve Taubert.

On a more positive note, Rohan finally embarks on his comeback with his first ressies game of the year. He's was used all over the park in ressies games last year. Meredith should be a straight swap for Parker in the middle of the park, while McNeil might also return to an on-ball role after playing on the wing.

Johnston's return adds height to this side and has been named at CHB with Spangher at FF. They might do a swap at some stage during the game.

Kruger looks to have suffered no major damage from his knock last week and will lineup on the wing again.

Weekly Haren update - spotted in tracksuit at halftime from the Queanbeyan game and then also on SwansTV.

Academy Players/Topups (one to be omitted)
    Changes
    In: Crawford, May
    Out: Mitch Thompson, Kane Murphy

Blake Guthrie and Jack Lynch are on NSW/ACT RAMS U18 duty, who play their final match this weekend. Mitch Thompson who had played the last 9 games, is also missing.

    Talking points
    • Dennis-Lane - Will he give us more to talk about this week?
    • Rohan - How many minutes will he get this week, and will he be a 'guarantee' for the seniors once he fulfils the fitness requirements
    • Spangher - Looked impressive as a leading forward, how will he fare against a tighter defence this week (assuming he plays forward)

Tuggeranong squad (2 to be omitted)
    • 1. Dave SMITH
    • 3. Alex LAWDER
    • 4. Zeke LAMB
    • 5. Matt GHIRARDELLO
    • 6. James McCABE
    • 7. Troy FENYVESI
    • 8. Chris ROBINSON
    • 9. Daniel JOHNSON
    • 10. Glenn CURRIE
    • 11. Nathan IRVINE
    • 12. Kurt MASTERS
    • 14. Peter ASHCROFT
    • 17. Chris MURCH
    • 18. Ben CLEAVER
    • 19. Ashley POCOCK
    • 24. Ben HANCOCK
    • 25. Phil LOVETT
    • 27. Tim CLEAVER
    • 30. Sam BURLEY
    • 31. David NOLEN
    • 32. Luke ANDREATTA
    • 33. Cody KICKETT
    • 40. Sean KELLY
    • 44. Lee CULNANE
    • 46. Kirk MAHON
    • 48. Toby RICHARDS

In: Andreatta, Culnane, Fenyvesi, Hancock, Lawder, Richards
    Out: Matthew BERNASCONI, Charlie PROWSE

It's a shame that Jed Lamb hasn't recovered from his hamstring injury in time to face his brother Zeke! (Seriously it is his brother). Ash Pocock is their leading goalscorer with 22 from 8 games while wingman-half forward David Smith, Ben Cleaver, Kurt Masters and Zeke Lamb have been their better players this year.

    Summary
The Swans have struggled in the past against the Hawks at Greenway Oval but given their form, the available personnel and how well-drilled they are, it would be the upset of the season should Tuggeranong manage to topple the Ressies.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Well done Ugg. Interesting to see if Spanger & TDL kick a bag this week against a better side.

Pity about Pykie, so Currie's nickname is Crusher? It fits as he sure knows how to throw his weight around. Maybe Spanger will do the duties as he is a very big fella.

Thanks ugg - comprehensive as usual. Cheers to those (Al, Annie ++) who take time to update us others - appreciated.

I hope TDL does whatever the coaches ask of him.

                Pretty impressive line up.

Hello sport fans from Tuggeranong. It's like a throw back to park footy here. Brown grass, cars around the oval and apart from a large building filling the skyline at the southern end seemingly nothing for miles around.

Swans having a kick on the field at the moment and I can confirm Rohan is definitely playing.

Also apologies in advance that the updates won't be up to the standard of Uggs brilliant work but I'll do my best.

Really should be giving TDL tackle count updates, goals are clearly irrelevant.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
