    Trademark footy...

Have the Swans taken out a trademark on the term 'trademark footy'?

It more or less appears to have started after the Richmond game when we just put in a shocker, which was unusual for us. In that game we didn't fight to the death and we did not live up to the adage often repeated on the footy talk shows 'You always know what you'll get with the Swans'....

Horse spouted something about us not hanging tough 'our trademark' and I reckon EVERY single player interview and article since that day has had a reference to our 'trademark footy'.

    Everybody.

I just hope it doesn't become a wank like 'Shinboner Spirit' which gets trotted out regularly for Norf, usually after one of their frequent 100 point beltings, something which hasn't happened to the Swans this millenium.

    Anybody else noticed?

Certainly noticed it, just like everything the reserves do is "pleasing".

      Yes.
I suspect there may be an unconscious connection with tradesman, be tradesmanlike, don't be flash, get in and get the job done.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Yes, it does seem an especially vacuous phrase. Why not just say 'contested footy'.

Curiously, I dig the phrase and its use. Don?t get me wrong; it does seem like the empty rhetoric that makes up politics, relationships, and in particular, sport. But it stills bring a smile to my face. I think I like it because when I hear it, and keep in mind, I have only really watched AFL since 2009, it reminds me of Brett Kirk. It reminds me that not matter your supposed limitations, if you play the game like you are defending your daughter from pillaging Vikings, you can be a champion. And when the team does it, they can achieve the impossible, like beating the Cats at Pussy Park. The Swans seem to own that kind of desperation. And for whatever reason (and I get this probably makes me a little lamb that has drunk the cool-aid) this really means something to me. As I said, I dig it.

This is not a new term. They came up with it around 2003. Watch shake down the thunder...goodes speaks of it there

@ Iwo: thank you for compliment. Though, with identity theft as rampant as it is, I am not sure I can give away such personal information.

Generally, despite the genesis of the term, I agree they have been saying it a lot recently. I would be surprised if Horse could get a coffee without working ?trademark footy? into the order.

I think the media dealing in cliches and stereotypes rather than actually doing any hard thinking and analysis was first remarked on in the year 1152 (BC, that is). But thank you for the observation. By the way, I am convinced that the Swans are a good wet weather team and it is terribly surprising every time we play like crap on rainy nights.
My opinion is objective truth in its purest form

I'm talking about the Swans players rolling out the cliche, not the media.

I see nothing wrong with a team having a cohesive vision of how they're going to play. Same as every player says Horse's favourite phrase is "Spread!", every player knows what kind of footy the Swans want to play. I think it's great!

And, if we get the rest of the AFL community to adopt "trademark footy" as the Swans style and lose the "boring, shutdown football" or whatever other labels have been applied, I think it's a brilliant marketing ploy as well.
