My impression (can't quote stats etc) is that he has been gradually regaining confidence and condition. I think he's the sort who won't hold back when the finals heat is on.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
I have wondered this myself, but after making a note to watch what he was doing during my replay indulgences, I find him as first officer in amongst our organising generals. He is doing important stuff but its not obvious stuff. He is not an extremely quick player, and with his ankles it would probably not be wise at this point.
Should be pointed out however that even the commentators noted that he has great core strength in his ability to stay on his feet under pressure. He is more of a "where did that come from" player just now not as much as a burst player as he was last year. But wait and see for 2012. Sorry for the strangled English

He's a lot more closely tagged than he was in the past - he's doing enough but hopefully he'll go to another level during this finals series - four big games would be good.
Not just coming back from ankles; he is pretty darned good, but not quite last year's level of greyhound. I am not ruling him out for the future, I am just talking about the last say 4 games...now saying that I am fairly sure he will prove me almost incorrect (I am never actually "wrong").......
