Pretty fair summation of the season. Good times ahead indeed.

I think there are good times ahead as well, still think it's going to be damn tough though. The teams up top still have many good years ahead as well and I suspect some of the Clubs below us might begin to improve as well. We really need the likes of Goodes/ROK/LRT/Richards/Rhyce/Mal to hang around for a few more years yet until our young kids bridge the gap. There's a damn lot of improvement still needed. Our Bloods ethos will only get us so far. I really hope we see improved skills and decision making next year, as well as some super fit strong bodies that will run all day. Can't wait though - already looking forward to it!!!!

I'm convinced there are good times ahead, but I completely agree with Nich that it is going to be very tough and there is a lot of work to do yet.

I think very quickly next season we will know where we at - as our problems are fundmental. We can't kick straight, and our skills overall this season were terrible and often our decision making not much better..

The forthcoming pre-season will be critical - for I don't have too many problems with our game plan or indeed with our overall list (although there is plenty of room to improve it, the nucleus of a really good footy side is there already) and we have some great young talent coming through that will only get better (just remember, Sammy Reid only turns 20 in December, Alex Johnson 20 next March, Luke Parker only turns 19 next month, Hannerbery and Rohan only turned 20 this year), but if our skills and goalkicking don't improve, then we are going nowhere fast.

If however, and I hope that this is what we see, our goalkicking and skills improve, then we will continue to improve. What was most promising this season was that when we were good (especially that wonderful victory over Geelong), we are already very good. The problem is, when we play badly, our bad game is very poor indeed. We need our good to be become brilliant, and our poor to become passable. This will only happen if our skills improve substantially over the summer, and we learn to be much more ruthless in front of goal. If that happens, then there is a lot of potential indeed in this team - and the only way we will go is up the ladder.

I am not convinced the skill issues are fundamental. The Swans have never been the most silky skilled team, but neither the field nor the goal kicking has been as bad in recent seasons as it was for most of this year. Confidence and familiarity with the game plan play a significant part in skill execution and decision making. Just watch the difference between the 2010 and 2011 versions of West Coast. Last year they couldn't hit a barn door with their disposals. This year they are into the top 4. Doesn't mean the same improvement will be seen by the Swans next year, but I don't think it is as hard to reach an acceptable level as it might seem right now.

The final month or so of the season gave us some hope that there is a forward line lurking somewhere within the squad. The big-bodied raw materials are there - it just needs a bit of crafting during the off-season so the players learn each other's patterns, learn to block for each other, and hopefully avoid multiple 4 man marking packs. I think both Jude and Ryno need to spend considerably more time in the forward line next year than the midfield. They are both capable of contributing as medium size marking and crumbing players, and we do need to pep the midfield up a bit to get some more run and spread. That is the aspect in which we were shown up by Hawthorn on Friday, and by Richmond a couple of months ago. Hopefully Jack can have a big pre-season and find his mojo again, Parker can get fitter, Mitchell might make some onball contribution (though he is quite slight at the moment, and no speedster).
