    Rnd 1, Mar 24, 2012 - GWS v Sydney Swans

GREATER Western Sydney will play the Sydney Swans on March 24 at ANZ Stadium next year as a stand-alone round-one fixture in a deliberate move to gatecrash the opening round of the NRL season.

The Giants put the idea to the AFL during their scheduling discussions earlier this year and the request is set to be confirmed in the coming weeks once the official 2012 season fixture is ratified by the commission.

I really don't get the need to have it as a standalone fixture. Fine if they want to play it first round but I don't like this idea of doing it just because NRL starts the week before.

I also don't like the idea of a Bye in the 2nd week, which is basically what we get now. Did Adelaide no favours last year.

This is a good move. The game will get a lot of coverage as a stand alone game. There will also be a lot of free publicity as the NRL knuckleheads carry on.

It's already working. This article was on the Herald Sun's NRL pages, not the AFL ones.

Empty grandstands, that is what will get.
We struggle to get 30000 out there against teams with good followings. I have a feeling there will be a lot of free tickets handed out.

Free tix galore - don't worry about that. And I can tell you now that the NRL writers will be bolding and headlining how many were given away. There will be a media rumble like never before next year. Todd Balym from the Telegraph was saying that GWS have put the media at the front of the House for their GF Luncheon. Normally the journos are right up the back. GWS know how badly they need to impress the media otherwise they will rip shreds off them next year if results and crowds are rubbish. It's going to be an interesting time, 2012.

Will this be our only match in Homebush in 2012? I hope so.....

There was a question in the 2011 members survey, hinting at including the GWS game in the membership being considered.
As for a stand alone fixture to go against the NRL not sure how successful that will be, no doubt there will be a AFL funded media blitz and associated "free" tickets it may work for one round but unless they are handing GWS freebies out for every home game, it will be like a band aid on a gaping wound.

Look on the bright side, we get four points for a practice match and one ANZ game out of the way.

Don't count on it. We will play at least 3 games out there next year, hopefully 5!!

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

If this game is played on Saturday March 24th next year, it won't co-incide with the Easter Show (14th-27th April), so that would preclude the possibility of some sort of joint promotion between the AFL/Giants/Swans and the RAS.

Hopefully it's OUR home game which gets one of the ANZ games out of the way.

I'm not really anti-ANZ at all, it is much, much easier for me to get there as a venue, but I just long for the days of an SCG full-house.

C'mon AFL, make it happen, Swans v Pies at the SCG...

I'm pretty sure it would be a GWS Giants home game, since they put the proposal forward. And, Triple B, I totally agree with you, ANZ Stadium is so much easier to get to, but the SCG's atmosphere is just amazing.
