20 Moments of Greatness - Leaping Leo #2

According to Leigh Matthews, Leo's famous mark is second in his list of all-time moments of grand final greatness.

We find out today what was supposedly even greater. Any guesses?

    It'll be Barry Breen's point in 1966.

Nope. Wayne Harmes in 1979. A bit rubbish really, but I guess the winner couldn't very well be an interstate team.

Harmes action of not giving up won that Grand Final for Carlton. You sound paranoid.

I would think the bigger factor is it was in the last few years so hasn't acquired that classic folkloric sheen. Barry's mark with both spectacular and the most important thing ever and therefore was better. c(:

Considering how few grand finals we've been in, I think Leo did well to come so high up in the estimation of someone like Leigh Matthews.

Well that's just a pathetic thing to say. The whole interstate conspiracy theory is tedious beyond belief. How about actually considering the two moments side by side? Harmes' effort was a huge grand final moment. But both personally and objectively, I think Leo Leo You Star's moment was far better. First, it was just more spectacular and required more raw skill and courage. Second, Carlton's pemiership "drought" at that time was all of seven years, so Harmes' tap hardly has the same drama and emotional significance as the breaking of a 72 year drought for the perennial red-headed stepchild of the VFL/AFL.
Whoever mentioned Barry Breen is on the money. That is the only Grand Final moment that could arguably match Leo's mark for sheer drama and emotional clout. But as Leo's mark required a crapload more skill, I'll give the chocolates to the boy from Deniliquin.
My opinion is objective truth in its purest form

But in defence of Harmes' effort, it did prolong the premiership drought of Collingwood for a further 11 years and has had Eddie bleeding about it for 3 decades.

                Surely that counts for something?

That does it for me. Harmes is a worthy winner.

Let's hope the new drought starts today.

But surely a match winner is more important than a match saver. If Leo doesn't take that mark, who's to say that we couldn't hold on for those last moments, who's to say that Seaby actually takes the mark and kicks the goal? Leo did well to get to number two, but a match winning moment is more important in the grand scheme of things..
