Pebbles - a foil for Reid?

There has been quite a number of posts (1,000's probably) about the need for a better structured forward line. One simple move could make a big difference, move ROK out of the middle and back to CHF/HFF. For a lot of years Pebbles was considered, quite rightly, one of the premier forwards in the game. This would give us to strong markers (ROK and Reid) across CHF and provide another avenue to F50/goal.
I realise ROK said he wanted to play in the midfield but with Parker coming on nicely and the possibility of TM also getting in the middle there is suddenly a lot of other options. Also, ROK had one of his best games of the year, EF against Aints, when he was loitering around the F50 a lot.

i have noticed Hannes, Bolton, ROK and Macca playing some good amount of time in the Forward lines this yr...........all 4 bring strong marks and organisation.........McGlynn was doing alot of our organisation and getting goals but then became a target............i suppose it depends on where Rohan, Jetta, Parker and maybe a couple others end up !

I've already mentioned this in another thread. If Parker gets another pre-season into him then he can spend more time in the middle and release ROK to the forwards which is where he did so much damage in 2005-6. This means that we lose the 'bomb and hope' clearances and gain a marking option. It has always made sense to me.

I agree on ROK spending more time forward. His contested marking has dipped since he left the forward line for the midfield (to be expected though, I imagine he's doing nowhere near the amount of work on it as he once was) but he can still clunk them. I'd be getting him to train more as a forward this year. Get his running power and speed up again and work his contested marking hard. Let him play as a forward who will push into the midfield at times to give the inside boys a break.

On McVeigh, he found his best spot this year IMO. It's not in the midfield and it's not on the wing or at HF. He has to be playing at HB for me next year. Organised play, won one on one's and disposed of the ball beautifully back there. Very important to have good decision makers and disposers of the ball across B now and I'd be playing him there all year in 2012.

I am not saying his being in the midfield didnt come at a cost in terms of forward power, but I think these stats would at least part answer your question

I dont have the numbers but I'd like to know what ROK's disposal efficiency was - I wouldn't think it would compare too favourably with others. I'd also prefer to see him back up forward and getting 15-20 possessions that are effective and meaningful rather than the bang it on the foot to wherever approach he often had in the midfield this year....

I assume these rankings are within the Swans. So it shows he got the ball quite a bit, but I am sure we have the talent to cover him.
A CHF line of ROK Reid and Rohan looks pretty good on paper. Rohan with possibly 5th best opposition defender on him looks like a great mis-match, as long as he stays healthy. Add in White, Spang and TDL/McGlynn and the whole front half looks decent.

For what it's worth

We are a very mediocre running side and can't afford to give up one of our best endurance runners from the midfield, he will play out the last part of his career in the forward line, but games are won and lost in the midfield and we don't have many gut runners
Very suss on efficiency numbers. It usually drops for players who have a high number of inside 50s simply because inside 50 will have more contests, and better than 50% efficiency inside 50 is pretty good (O'Keefe is third behind Goodes and Kennedy)

I think Spangher will be a spare parts in and out of the side player. Would be excited to see Lewis Johnston get the fitness to be a lead up forward, White doesn't read the play well enough. I am with KB who on the radio this week nominated him as a huge talent, some of his goals i.e. like his one against West Coast are pretty unbelievable, if he gets himself properly fit he can still be a very good player IMHO. Needs to mature a bit, but I think definately FF, Reid CHF

We need ROK's endurance and toughness in the middle. Jude will be spending more time forward 2012, leaving the door open for Parker to find his feet in the tough stuff
