Seriously, there was a huge rivalry between Manly and Wests in the RL in the '70's and Manly were called the Silvertails. Can anyone remember what Wests were called? East v West this is the sort of rivalry Sydney understands.

        The Fibros, IIRC.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

          Yep the Fibros...

But that was a real rivalry, where people cared for their teams and what they stood for, and saw the opposition as hated polar opposites. Passion, blood & guts, fights, tears etc. The AFL has some of these rivalries and they're great. This will not be one of them....

Not much fibro out there nowadays, its kind of deadly. I am in a brick home unit. The McMansion belt have better digs than I have.

            McMansions v The Highrises?

Not sure if that's a crack at Sydneysiders or not. However the whole Fibros/Silvertails type of rivalry wouldn't work now. Simply because the Western Suburbs of Sydney has gentrified over the years and the west as a whole would not like to be portrayed as "Fibros".
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Been to Blacktown lately Al? I wouldn't live there nor Harris Park or Mt Druitt and surrounds and I consider myself working class lower middle class if any class at all as I don't actually like the class stuff. It is so English. But my point is there are still areas of Us & Them mentality in this city whether you like it or not. I am sure the people of Manley would get peeved if you compared them to blacktown & vica versa.

During the Fibros/Silvertails period the west was predominantly blue collar which is why this rivalry was so strong. While as you point out there are still pockets of disadvantage the west has been gentrified. The rise of the "McMansion" in countless new estates has changed the dynamics of the west. A Fibros/Silvertails type rivalry won't work anymore.

Silvertails and Fibros as you put it is a psychological thing. The people who got wealthy in the west did so from trades, small business and small companies. But the one thing they all have is that working class ethos even though they may have become conservative politically. I have lived in South Strathfield which borders Enfield, Croyden, Campsie, Lakembs, Belfield etc. There are plenty of MacMansions there but they all have one thing in common, if you accused them of being amongst the middle wealthy they would be very miffed even though they have money. They do see themselves as upwardly mobile but they are a more down to earth new tradie style wealth. I believe the East v West thing would work better than Silvertails v Fibros. How about Silvers v Tradies? The people of the West have always and still do maintain a love/hate relationship with those from the East.
