    Doubts over Jacks Draft

It's been alleged that a Stat Dec from Jack which allowed the Swans to draft him doesn't match public comments from him.

The AFL has cleared Jack of any wrong doing but the Age doesn't seem to want to let it go.

If Jack is proven to have lied in a stat dec I wonder what the consequences would be.

"Both Kieren and Garry Jack have subsequently - and independently - told journalists that, in fact, no such registration was ever submitted because the family was ignorant of the AFL draft protocol."

"The legal document, held by the AFL and seen by The Sunday Age, is a one-sentence statement by Kieren Jack that he registered for the 2005 national draft."

Hm, that actually does sound quite dodgy.

Maybe so but if public comments by the Jacks contradict assertions made in a legal document held by the AFL then there's going to be an issue.

        Hopefully nothing comes of it.

I doubt anything would come of it, seems like a bit of a beat up. This was raised with the AFL at the time and all other clubs were informed. Jack had zero interest from any other club, and was the last one picked in the rookie draft, to cry foul now would be a bit childish.

As for the stat dec, to be honest I can't see anyone caring enough to bother investigating, there was no mischief at all, and no-one was disadvantaged by it.

Didn't the article say the AFL did investigate and found no wrongdoing? Surely there is no issue - All clubs were informed at the time that he was a late registration ... It's not as if he was sought after at the time!

Not sure it's a beat up if there's evidence of lying on a stat dec which is a serious business.

"Under section 11 of the Statutory Declarations Act 1959, the penalty for making a false statement in a statutory declaration is 4 years imprisonment."
              Statutory declaration information sheet

The AFL relied on that Stat Dec to allow Jack to be drafted and not sit out for 12 months which the rules at the time stated. It could be argued that Jack gained an advantage by lying so it's my view that it's a worrying situation.

Fingers crossed I'm reading too much into it and all will be sweet.

I'm testing my memory here but I'm sure the AFL made the decision on the day of the rookie draft that K.Jack went into the pool with all the other potential draftees to prevent any draft tampering and wasn't put on as a NSW rookie as we would have liked. As a result every other AFL club had a chance to pick him up but chose not to and as a result we did with a very low pick.
Without a doubt this is a media beat up in what has been a very quiet week AFL wise.

If that were true why did the AFL require a stat dec from Jack about missing paperwork??

The issue here is that the AFL allowed Jack into the draft and relied on the stat dec to do it. No problem or drama with that unless the stat dec contained a false declaration. It's the false declaration that will have legs if proven.

That's where the issue lies Al. The stat dec is the concern and that was done purely to satisfy the AFL by the sound of it.

My memory wasn't too bad as our 3 NSW picks that year (2005) were Ed Barlow, Sam Rowe and Adam Prior. The last live pick in the draft was Kieran Jack at pick 57 to us.
Interesting to read that pick 55 was Ben McGlynn to Hawthorn, 2 pretty handy midfielders for us.

Roy Masters! Is that the same Roy Masters who is a serial AFL hater? Or, being a Melbournian, am I getting him mixed up with someone else.

Nothing will come of it. It does come across as a bit dodgy, but clearly the AFL were keen to have him listed by Sydney and cleared him in a follow up investigation.

"I can't recall all the details, it was a long time ago, was an exciting time" is probably the best quote I can give the Jack family to utilise here on in.

Jack & Swans will be fine. If the story is correct, then Demetriou is up to his eyeballs in it and given he is the king of denial, it will be quickly swept back under the carpet.

The Roy Masters and Tim Lanes of the world are haters of our club,so anything they bring up to the negative is just bitterness about the Bloods.
