The Telegraph is the official AFL paper in Sydney??????? Don't they, like OWN the NRL or something? Reminds me of the very first season of X Factor Australia....you won't remember this - it was 2004 and NOBODY watched it....why? It was a huge hit in the UK....Simon Cowell's new baby, right? But in Australia it was bought by Channel Ten who made it, didn't publicise it and then halfway through the Season started running the new season of American Idol!!!! In other words Channel Ten paid the best part of a million dollars to ensure a potential rival show for American Idol was a bomb. Sound familiar? BTW I was involved in the production so my information is impeccable.

Thats just like how a commercial station with interests in another code held back soccer knowing full well that soccer was a sleeping giant.

Back before the A-League ch 7 bought the rights to the NSL and killed the comp by just showing highlights at midnight when they could be bothered or selling a badly produced highlights package to SBS. No promotion at all, not even one story on the nightly news. Ch 7 basically played a massive role in killing the old nsl and holding back the development of a decent league in australia. Sure there were other major factors but not being able to promote the league or code becasue a commercial station owned the rights and refused to do anything with them made it even harder. And the fact that at the time AFL in melbourne was basically run by ch 7 made the pain worst.

Now the A-League is finally on FTA and is fast becoming a major force in this country compared to just a few years ago when this new league was again on shaky grounds Exciting time for the codes growth.

Not so good for the AFL in sydney.
