A mate of mine had the following letter printed in the SMH yesterday. It was voted best letter of the day. And, he's a Richmond supporter.

AFL too deluded to take a good, hard look at itself

I am an equally passionate fan of Aussie rules and rugby league, the two great people's games of Australia. However, the different attitudes revealed this season by the respective codes' administrators and fans with regard to a very important aspect of their cultures cannot avoid comparison.
We've just witnessed a thrilling NRL grand final played between two brilliantly creative and adventurous teams, each captained by Aboriginal greats. This followed the NRL bestowing its highest award, the Dally M medal, on one of those skippers, Jonathan Thurston, who was then also awarded the grand final best and fairest medal. Thurston is widely revered throughout the rugby league world, and his opposing skipper, Justin Hodges, is also widely respected. Most fans at the stadium stayed to witness Thurston lifting the trophy aloft out of respect for this Indigenous legend.
Compare this to the disgraceful reception AFL Aboriginal champion Adam Goodes has received at AFL stadiums this season. This legend of the game was even booed loudly by opposition fans when he kicked the football for the final time in his illustrious career, and this when the opposition already had the game in the bag.
It was a dismal, disillusioning and deeply disappointing scene. For Goodes to then (understandably) avoid the retiring players' parade before the AFL grand final, for fear of being booed by fans of both combatants, was a shameful end to what has been a lamentable season for the AFL in many ways.
AFL enjoys portraying its game and fans as more diverse and more sophisticated than rugby league's. But is this not simply a major, self-evident, delusion? Perhaps it's also a delusion that serves to prevent the AFL from taking a necessary good hard look at itself?
It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

Hi, Stevo, I've just been stirring up a few of the residual bigots on the Sports Fan site. Strangely, even though I seem to be outnumbered, they don't seem to be winning the argument. Anyway, they seem to think that I am you. Perhaps you'd like to disabuse them of that notion?

I'll do that! I haven't been on there too much lately, I see the same knobs on there saying the same tired things and think, what's the point, but it does depend on my mood. I'll fire up!

And see the second frame in this Guardian cartoon. I've got a feeling that the AFL may be getting the message.

Dejavoodoo, I 'fired up!' Check out Sportsfan, I had some fun, I think you'll be impressed! PS; yes, it is the same old bigots, and, FFS, they're persistently, repetitively stupid aren't they? I await their predictable responses and steel myself for the next round.

Well, it's obvious they're receiving it, but whether they 'get it', only time will tell. Great cartoon, well at least the second frame.

Yes, Stevo, I did notice your effort. I literally laughed out loud, just as our somewhat crabby neuroscience lecturer was starting her lecture. Oh well, it's not the first time and it probably won't be the last, that she has given me a somewhat displeased look.
And yes, they are so predictably unimaginative. Two examples of them just parroting the most inane sentiments. One was where one of them interrupted, their below a woodland bridge gathering of furry, angry, little things, to call me a troll. I mean, every time that someone disagrees with their mean spirited world view, it's always, you're a troll. And the second was, with them there is never an appropriate level of engagement: that is, if you make more than half a dozen comments, you're obsessed, if you make less, you're an interloper.
Oh well, as long as I make angry bigots angrier, I feel my work is done.

Something else sure to bring out the haters:

Retired Sydney star Adam Goodes' war dance preserved on canvas

Looks great. I doubt it's in my price range, otherwise I'd buy one for sure!

Love this quote from the article:

"I've got no right to say anything on behalf of an Indigenous person. What do I know?" he said "But I've got the right to say I'm pissed off at the reaction to something that's happening in my community.

"I felt a kind of shame for my society, that the reaction was so loud, that people were so lazy in their thinking not to understand that on this occasion there was more to it. It's not just about upsetting an opposition player to get an advantage for your team.

"Sometimes, you've got to see there's more to it."

I played some footy with Jamie Cooper after he left Fitzroy. He's an outstanding man (and was a hell of a player too). I'll be buying one.
