    Brownlow Medal 2017

Just read that Buddy is not there as he had (minor) ankle surgery last week. So Swans at function seem to be Kennedy, Hannebery, Parker and Lloyd.

Also this hilarious tweet from Ted Richards:

"First #Brownlow as a retired footballer. Going to be weird not hearing my name read out so much tonight."

I think he did get 3 votes last year.

Franklin polling well through our early rounds. Will be hard to top as our leading vote getter from this point on.

So, Channel 7 decides to accompany the phone exchange between Brad Scott and Majak Daw with the words ?Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again? from Simon and Garfunkel?s, The Sound of Silence.

It would have been an interesting year if that was still the reality.

Except it wouldn't have happened. Mitchell is filling a similar role at the Hawks to the role Kennedy fills with us. If they were both playing in the same side, even if Mitchell were given the onball time that he never got with us, they'd be taking votes away from each other.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, what was the last Brownlow-Premiership?

Wow! Round 19 Hawthorn v Sydney and McEvoy doesn't get a vote. That is harsh. Would have been exciting if Dangerfield was eligible. Otherwise a bit of a snoozefest.

11 BOGs , unheard of . Glad he beat Danger outright.

It's a pretty astonishing ride to superstar.

I think the Swans have polled the most votes in total in the Brownlow for the two most recent seasons (2015 and 2016) by a reasonable margin. It was to be expected we'd be someway back this year, given our slightly more modest H&A season but, surprisingly, we're still right up there. I haven't added up every club's aggregate scores but I did look at the top 4 finishers at the end of the H&A. Adelaide polled the most votes (90 by my count but I could be out one or two as I did it quickly in my head) and the Swans were second on 88. By comparison, the Giants polled 81, Geelong 80 and Richmond 84.

So we might complain about perceived umpiring bias in games, but it seems the umps do notice our good players slightly out of proportion to performance - though if you take percentage as a proxy measure for how much games are dominated, we could be expected to be in the top handful of teams.

In general, where the Swans comfortably won games, the majority (or all) of the six votes went to Swans players. In contrast, Swans players picked up votes in games where we were soundly beaten on the scoreboard, including a 1+2 in the first Dogs game, a 2 to Kennedy against West Coast, and a BOG to Franklin in the round 1 loss to Port. (Having said that, the team got absolutely no votes against Collingwood, despite only losing by a single vote.)

It was more a comment about having one more genuinely talented player in our midfield group (and one who has continued to improve).
