    VFL 2019 NEAFL discussion thread

I thought I'd use the release of the 2019 NEAFL fixture as a reason to kick off a NEAFL discussion thread for the upcoming season.

    NEAFL: Swans welcome 2019 fixture - sydneyswans.com.au

The thing that is clearly missing from this fixture is games at the SCG - which for fans is probably the only thing that we really care about with the fixture. How many times will we get to see the reserves play as a curtain raiser before a senior game. I presume all (or most) of the games where the venue is marked as "TBA" are those where the NEAFL game is potentially a curtain raiser but that they are still in negotiation with the SCG as to whether it can host these games. It will be irritating in the extreme if the higher usage of the ground (and hence potential for wear on the surface) during 2019 (and beyond) means we won't get to see the NEAFL team on the SCG at all, or as much.

The redevelopment of the Bus Loop Oval site (that is currently happening) might mean that games are played there if the SCG is not prepared to host them. I guess we'll have to wait and see. While that's a little better than having to trek out to Olympic Park or BISP to see the team play (especially if a senior game is on later than afternoon), it's not nearly as much fun watching a game on Bus Loop Oval as it is in the SCG, given there's no elevated position from which you can watch. I somehow doubt the redevelopment will include the addition of even a basic stand.

    2019 NEAFL fixture revealed

    2019 NEAFL Fixture Released

Not sure why but 7 of our fixtures have a TBA venue, with all but the last one lining up with date and time to being a curtain raiser for a SCG home game.

Be interesting to see what the eligibility rules for the academy players now Sydney have an academy side in the TAC cup.

TAC Cup set for major overhaul in 2019 - AFL.com.au

Would players like Wicks be expected to spend the majority of his time in the the TAC cup if this had happened a year ago.

I don't imagine eligibility rules for academy players in the NEAFL team will change but the new TAC Cup team could present some challenges to the club as they will need to field two sides for a longer portion of the season and consider which side (ie the NEAFL side or the TAC side) is better for the development of players in different age groups.

For the last few years an U18 side (which included a smattering of U19 players too) participated in the Academy series early in the year. That meant that most of the U18 players, the best of the U17 players, and some of the U19 players weren't available to the NEAFL side. However, the timing of this series towards the start of the year (when you'd expect the build-up injury impact of listed players to be lower) meant that fewer academy players were needed as top-ups for the NEAFL side. Thus the impact wasn't great.

As the season progresses, one would expect the injury toll on listed players will increase and it is to be expected that a few will have succumbed to long term, or even season-ending, injuries. Thus the NEAFL team will rely more and more on top-ups as the season draws to a climax. However, the TAC Cup team will now be a competing claim on academy players for most of the season, not just early when the academy series is played.

I expect this means that more U17 academy players will get exposure to playing in a Swans team - whichever one - than has happened in recent seasons. Generally we've seen only a few U17 year olds play NEAFL and not many more play in the academy series (let alone be considered for the combined Allies team in the U18 championships). Heeney, for example, didn't play NEAFL until the final game of his U17 year. He debuted the same week as Abe Davis. Mills, on the other hand, played a substantial number of NEAFL games as an U17 (and hardly any as an U18 because he was injured for most of the year). Similarly, injuries have robbed Blakey of much NEAFL exposure. His back issues last year arose before he got a chance to make his debut, and then this year illness limited him to one mid-season game, and the ankle injury prevented follow-up appearances. Raynor did play a handful of games this year as an U17, with Hamish Ellem and Jackson Barling also making a couple of appearances each. Jake Brown, on the other hand, played a lot of games with the NEAFL side as both an U17 and U18 player.

The 2019 U17 academy squad has been touted as being particularly strong. A couple of them are in the AFL Allies academy for next year and a few more sound like they are knocking on the door. So I expect we will see far more of this cohort in 2019 in the NEAFL team, and also get to see them (or at least read about them) in the TAC side too.

The club is also allowed to apply for permission for top-ups from other sources to run out with the NEAFL side too. Dunkley played one game last year, and of course Rampe also auditioned in the NEAFL for a late season game the year before he was drafted. If resources get stretched too thinly between the NEAFL side and the TAC team we may see more non-academy top ups play.

Last couple of years 2017 and 2018 GWS NEAFL have used players from the Sydney comp as top ups when they had a lot of injuries.

They even pulled a 29 year old from Broken Hill at one point

Bit rough making Canberra travel to Newcastle for a practice match. Might have been better to fixture the Giants match there.

Don't forget the NEAFL practice game against Sydney Uni Saturday 16/3 11:00am at Henson Park!

Sydney Uni Football Club were originally going to set up a BBQ and sell food, but they have decided to cancel the BBQ due to the predicted bad weather.

Well there's two disappointments in one post: bad weather and no bbq.
