    Team List Best 22 2021

Is it too early to have a crack at the R1 2021 best 22? I dare say it would be given there's still alot of water to flow under the proverbial red and white bridge. But here's my go. Assumptions made:
    1) We draft Gulden and Campbell.
    2) We don't get a quality ruck but pick up a journeyman for depth. Naismith injured.
    3) Buddy fit to start.

    B Mills Rampe Cunningham
    HB Lloyd McCartain Dawson
    C Florent Rowbottom Blakey
    HF Heeney Franklin Hayward
    F Papley Reid Aliir
    Foll Sinclair Parker Kennedy
Interchange Stephens, McInerney, Hewett, Campbell or Gulden

I'd like to see Heeney play more on ball, splitting duties with Parker and Joey. Aliir showed promise in the ruck forward role and can always swing back to support defence if required (free Mills to play mid throughout a game?).

If we can finally get a good run with injuries, hopefully can be just outside 8 or just in it (I'm being optimistic with this last statement).

    Pretty good attempt Ralph.

My only changes would be to bring Fox (bench) and Melican (back pocket) in, move Mills to the midfield and leave out Hewett + Campbell/Gulden.

I'd bring Melican in for sure for his size if nothing else, with Brand and hopefully Gould as depth, but would keep Mills in the back seven rotation.

I like Hewitt, but am not sure about playing him, Parker, and Kennedy in the same team, particularly at the expense of some speed. I also think that any new recruits have to get past Bell for that 22nd spot.

If we play Heeney in the middle, we do become very slow with the five players to role through there.
        Kennedy, Hewett, Parker, Heeney, Clarke
Joey Kennedy surely cannot play any other position - He has to be in the middle.
Hewett - again a specialist center player - probably a bit more versatile than Joey but i doubt he would be thrown forward or on the wing except for maybe resting.
Luke Parker - The only versatile player in that list with marking ability up forward. But when he does go forward he seems to try and play the defender than the ball.
Clarke - probably does not get a game if Hewett is fit
That leaves the discussion regarding Heeney. In my opinion Heeney is HF or plays a versatile role with no fixed spot.
Heeney plays 60 - 70% forward for me.

I would rather get the faster players to role through the middle.
Rowbottom, Stephens, Campbell, Florent and 10 - 20% Papley maybe Gulden or the new recruit.

If we have Heeney, Hayward, Reid and Franklin as permanent forwards along with Dawson, Parker and Campbell rolling through there, we would have a decent list of marking targets. This would definitely stretch the opposition.
Only problem is we need one more pressure small forward with that list ala Papley. Maybe Campbell can do that role. He seems to have pretty good intensity and good with his skills. Wicks can do that role but with the team fully fit he may find it difficult to break into the team.

If we get a power forward - Reid will have to go. He will struggle to do any role in that case. the only role he is capable doing at the moment is Forward Ruck.
Franklin probably does not play all games next year - maybe plays 2/3rd games - misses all the short turn around games i guess - so players like Hayden McLean will get a look in - or switching McCartin may be an option.

Mills surely does not go into the middle despite what a lot of people are hoping

          Fail.

With any "next year team" you pick, it needs your high draft pick in whatever hole it is you identify.

I see no Pick No.3 in this team.

ANNNND seriously, if Aliir has to play forward - all is lost.

I'm making no assumptions on number 3. We could split, trade, draft KPF, KPD or the best available who happens to be a mid. Just too many variables at this stage.
Aliir showed some promise playing ruck forward. Whether it is him or Reid, there's every likelihood of we will need someone to support whoever is ticking for us.
You might ask why bother speculating on next year's team. Two reasons:
            1) I find it useful to articulate this as it gives me an idea what we might do in the upcoming draft
            2) As sad as it sounds, something to talk about seeing as our team is out.

But you know, each to their own.

I'm not poo pooing your selection. It shows we have a healthy list.

Just saying, IMO Aliir is a backman and Dawson is a midfielder.

Naismith is a better ruckman than Sinclair.

From your team, it is likely that only Franklin, Kennedy and Sinclair will not be part of our next premiership challenge.

Neither can Franklin. Still in the best 22.

Controversial but I’ll say it. Aliir is overrated. He’s the Mitch Marsh of our team. Not good enough as a specialist anything but can show something special for short periods. I’ve always wished he would take the consistent step to be a star but he hasn’t and is a hole filler at best.

He's shown enough as a defender to show his future is there. He is talented, just needs to be consistent. He's played a few cracking games in defense.

If everyone could get on the park we'd have a pretty good team.

Maybe. He could also be the (howls of derision, I’m not suggesting he’s that good) Adam Goodes of the team. Tall and athletic, the club needs to figure out how to make the most of him. And if he does there’s a lot of upside.

I agree he’s not got a spot in the side yet.

Campbell's highlight tape is very impressive:

I have a feeling that with a plethora of mids that Heeney will be Full Forward at the first bounce in 2021.
