    Hi all,

Hope everyone is enjoying their newfound freedom - I know I have been! I've been up the coast for the last few weeks and booked my youngest in for specialised footy training classes under Matthew Scarlett. Wasn't sure what to expect, had heard great things from a few friends whose kids had been part of the program.. so i turn up and who should I see? Tom McCartin! Apparently he's been lending his Sundays to help out and coach. I got to have a chat with him and he mentioned he was in great knick and was planning to head back up to Sydney in a fortnight. Seemed like a friendly enough young man. He was fantastic with the kids, had a great sense of humour, a lot wittier than when he was talking to me, the other coaches and even from what I've seen in his interviews. Must be the kids that bring it out of him!!

Wonderful to see one of our players giving back to the community a bit and making himself a great model for the next generation!!

A few other off-season sightings so far that might be of interest to RWOers:

    - Hayden McLean has joined a family friends' fitness program down in Moorabbin, focusing on speed and endurance work.

    - I'm reliably informed a handful of Victorian-based players, at least two of who are Oli Florent and Joel Amartey, relocated their off-season fitness regimes to Sydney, to train at the club.

    - And as some of you might've seen on the Swans' Twitter account, Logan McDonald seems to be doing some intense physical training of his own over in Perth.

Great to see the players taking things so seriously and not letting things opening up again get in the way of their hunger! We have a fired up group ready for what 2022 will bring!!

Did you ask Paddy if the Swans had promised him anything?

Thanks for that great sharing, NB! Very interested to hear all that. Where are Matthew Scarlett's footy classes?

One of the champions of the game, Russell Ebert, has passed away at 74 of cancer. Russell was an unbelievable player for Port in the SANFL and never played in the VFL which was a pity.

Believe he and Graham Cornes played at Nth Melb late in their careers. Sad news.

They played him and he did well and he finished off his u18 year with the Nthn Knights where he did ok. I think the Swans saw him play in a rep game between AGS v APS schools where he was apparently BOG. He wasn't on the radar because of his non traditional pathway
Ha , if by non traditional you mean not a rich kid who was in the boys club as a junior then yep . How sad for the game

                    Hi bloodspirit,

The specific sessions my son attended with Scarlett were in Newtown up in Geelong. Brendan McCartney is the usual coach but Scarlett is the new addition. Not a bad one at that!! Bonus seeing a Blood there on the day

All the former footy players , bosses, execs , chairmans , agents, media figures etc Based out of Melb and their sons, nephews , grandsons reap the benefits. Private schools , footy scholarships that are paid for not earned. Half the Vic Metro squad bought their way in every year and i know this for a fact. Think the Silvagnis etc. there's a 3rd brother that would 've been drafted to the Blues if SOS was still in his job. Its a boys club and gives outsiders like Jmac no chance unless recruiters like Beatson take the punt on them and thank christ they do from time to time cause half the players from the boys club cant play for peanuts !

“Rich kid”? The kid can’t be blamed for the opportunities that a parents want to give them. And the parents can’t be blamed for wanting the best for their children. Sad view on life

Who said i blamed the kids ? Everyone wants whats best for their kids but its a corrupt system boys who wouldnt make it otherwise get given opportunities through the wallet ! What about whats best for the less fortunate kids ? How many other Jmacs are out there never to be discovered because their spot was given to the kid whose dad owns this or that business or his related to such and such ?

I'm sure there's a fair bit of undue influence that occurs in the opportunities offered to kids, but I'd need a bit more evidence than "I know this for a fact" to accept that it is as widespread and systemic as you suggest.
