General footy chat Round 14: the other games. Bye bye bye rounds.

This round is the final of the three bye rounds. I'd probably prefer just one bye round for everybody, to get the bye over with, but I'm sure that there are good arguments either way. However, I couldn't be bothered making any of them.

The round opens with the currently fourth placed Carlton playing the ninth placed Richmond*. The thing I find most interesting is the different perceptions of the two outfits. One the one hand, Richmond have won three premierships in the last five seasons. Conversely, Carlton haven't played finals since 2013, haven't played a grand final since 1999 and their last premiership was in 1995. But I suspect that I'm not the only one, who more strongly begrudges Carlton's current period of success and therefore, hopes that it rapidly comes to an end.

The Friday night game is St Kilda v Essendon. You'd think that after Essendon put in quite an insipid effort for their 150th birthday celebrations last week, then they'll probably dish up more of the same, against the highly rated Saints. But I don't know, I'm getting the whiff of an upset in this one. Or maybe that's just a whiff of cleaning and building products from the renovations going on across the street?

The first Saturday game is our trip to Adelaide to take on Port, which I'm feeling pretty confident about. Although Port did beat us after the bye last season. Not sure if we've improved all that much, but I think Port have definitely gone backwards.

After that game, the suffering should continue for West Coast when they host Geelong.

Next up, a few of us will probably be in the strange position of barracking for GWS, when they take on the Western Bulldogs. This should be a quality game, with GWS desperate to keep their faint chance of making the eight alive, while the Bulldogs will be keen not to slip further into irrelevance. Though it might be a game where my allegiance keeps on swapping. Toby commits a random act of violence or smirks at the camera, then I'm jumping off the Giants bandwagon; then Weightman stages for a free, and it's back to, go Giants. I start thinking of all the high GWS draft picks and it's back to the Bulldogs. I notice the free kick count and it's back to the Giants.

Another team desperate to keep their very faint hopes alive is Adelaide, who host Gold Coast in the only Sunday game, But even though the Suns aren't known for putting together winning streaks, I think this Suns outfit is a fair bit more durable than previous versions, so hopefully they'll finish of the Crows.

*I didn't make the obvious Richmond statement, so I expect no one else too. I mean, surely we're more creative than that?

There's an article on ABC (I'm not game to try posting the link) which includes a link to this great snippet from a 1964 game between the Demons and Hawks: VFL 1964 Round 17 - Hawthorn v Melbourne - YouTube. Apart from the field surface they were playing on (total mud - at one point the ball is dropped and doesn't bounce AT ALL and yet they were bouncing the ball to restart at stoppages!!), another thing that caught my eye is the dapper outfit someone who I can only assume was a runner came out in - check at about the 1:50 mark.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

It's wonderful to watch the Blues get beat. Part way through the second and they've managed four behinds. I hope their form continues!

Enjoyable to watch, isn't it? Very enjoyable! Of course, plenty of time left but Tigers are smashing 'em!

I'd like a few more from the Tigers before half time. Put them away now. It would be great to see them slide down the ladder and dare I say ... out if the eight.

The ground looks very heavy this evening - quite possibly mark both these teams down for a loss next week

Hope that late Richmond goal was a momentum killer.
I'm with IU2 on Liam Baker. Seems to win almost every contest and he makes contests in situations where others wouldn't. He also came off their rookie list.

Yikes! Carlton back within 14 pts! Might regret going the early crow!

It's very tight in the top 8. If Richmond win, which is looking likely, we could slip to as eighth if we lose vs Port. If we win, we will likely climb to 6th, as I would expect St Kilda and Geelong to both win big vs Essendon and WCE respectively.

Great clip. I'll have a go at the link:

From the SCG to Kardinia Park — do ground sizes contribute to the end result in AFL games?

Another excellent article from Sean and Cody. Ground size is one of those factors that footy pundits love to go on about every week but when you look at the data - not a big effect. Along with 6-day breaks, "going well in the wet" and "tall men can't reach the ground".

One of my all time favourites are golf commentators talking about the ball being drawn towards "the water" or "the ocean" whenever
someone is putting regardless of which direction they are hitting it.

Luke Darcy commentating a Bulldogs game is just painful to listen to.

He'll probably manage to get their names right, though.

Luke Darcy is painful 100% of the time!

Next week all the top 8 sides play another top 8 side. Fascinating round
