One good sign from last night is Horse has twice picked through an elite defensive system, which is what you encounter in finals - but using two very different methods. Melbourne and Freo are the two best defensive sides in the comp, who set up brilliantly behind the ball and then surge it forward, with their small or high half forwards critical.
Against Melbourne, we were prepared to go long to a contest or towards the boundary, effect a stoppage or a throw in. Against Freo, it was chip, chip, chip. In both cases, we refused to stream mindlessly into the spider web set up behind the ball, and they couldn’t sling shot back. It took their small and medium forwards out of the game, and gave our defence more time to stablise when it came back our way.
It was notable last night that Fox, Lloyd, Ramps and Ollie were our highest mark players. Not by going backwards, but by using small pockets of space to progress the ball forward. When it was time to go, we could - like when Rowbottom took a mark on the wing, had Chad running by and gave the handball so he could pump it inside 50 - but never mindlessly.
Great coaching, and great execution by the players.
As important a player to a team than any other, you cant talk about Melb defensive system if May isnt playingComment

I suspect we rarely had all three talls in the forward 50 and Amartey's time on ground was largely when Franklin, Reid or Hickey were off.Comment

Chad and Errol together are geniuses . Cant wait for Jmac to get fit and find his best , he is every bit as good as them . Blakey tooComment

Was great wasnt it. But as great as that goal was, the kick to Hayward in the pocket was truly out of this world great.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Well, Chadmania is everywhere today.
Damien Barrett, who to be fair has been on the Chad train for a while now, has gone big again this morning.
BARRETT: Cats' not-so-secret weapon, this Swan will win a Brownlow
And there is an article in the Herald (won't link, as they seem to screw up threads), with Parker talking up Chadmania.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Chad in April this year
"The biggest thing for me is my defensive transition two way running," he said.
"From last year, I've made a massive improvement on that which is great.
"That's the main thing we (Warner and Swans assistant coach Dean Cox) look at when we do our review with each other.
"He makes sure I'm having the most metres I can running defensively and putting teams to the sword offensively with my bursts and power, using my legs through the stoppage.
"That's my strength at the moment, being able to break a tackle and go forward with it."
And it has worked........i was watching his two way running on the wknd and the kid is up and down that centre line like a beep test..........amazing actually his gut running to minimise the opposition impact.
How 'once-in-a-lifetime' pre-season set Chad Warner up for success"be tough, only when it gets tough"

You well know my views of JMac.
Whilst he wasn't back to his absolute best, I do think his game on the weekend was very solid and his best for a month or so. Some very good moments and hopefully a sign he'll be fully back on track soon.
What's more, him and Dylan seem to be working very well together as wingers. I've been confident on Dyl since the glimpses we saw in season one, and glad we're getting to see more now. I reckon Horse will have loved those closing two minutes from him the other night.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

+1 for him and Dyl , i said it about Dyl all along , he suits our game plan perfect , holds his width and covers so much ground and has the toe to do it . Might not be elite , his kicking needs work and he still does too many silly things when under pressure . But he belongs in this team no doubt about it .
What i like about our team is we have a pair of runners at each point in the ground who are quick and work up back and forth . Fox and Florent at HB, Jmac and Dylan on wings , Paps and Hayward at HF . So anywhere on the ground we have got coverage on the outside for a quick dish off with the handball . Fantastic coaching and glad they didnt listen to me and drop half of those blokes or i wouldnt be here talking about it working so wellComment
