RWO admin message Bans, infractions, suspensions

    Hi RWO

Can I please make a few points to clear any confusion around recent moderation.

There was good reason for me to permanently suspend Bangalore Swans. It was precisely the same reason why I banned Matt80, and the same reason why I have banned two other incarnations of that same user. It's the same person with the same method that ultimately sees us lose members.

I will always take the position that if someone is a drain on this site in net terms, they are banned. And there is no bigger concern to me than losing members. Without members we have no site. You may have liked his posts but if there are enough who get to the point where they no longer wish to be here because of an individual then I have to take action. It's just not negotiable I'm sorry. In order to remain viable, we need to maintain or grow in membership, not decline.

On the issue of moderation, the reality is there are people on the other end of the screen who have their own views and emotions. The moderators have to try and balance all of that to maintain the peace so to speak. If you are modded, don't take it personally, it's not personal. Most of the time it's preventative, sonI understand how you may feel like it's unfair. But the mods have to make a call one way or the other, so please just move on and respect that.

We don't have some secret chat where we flex and gloat over who to mod or who to ban. It's literally just a quick consensus then a decision.

Mods are volunteers who invest a lot of time keeping the peace and they do a great job.

Finally please don't take this site for granted.

It turns 20 next year. Let that sink in. It was built by people who saw value in building a community that was genuinely member-owned. It has passed on through three custodians including me.

Big footy is owned by a US company.

RWO costs you nothing. It asks nothing in return other than your constructive participation and occasionally your compliance with a request from me or the mods That's it.

    Thanks Danzar.

Can I make a financial contribution to the site's maintenance?

My view is that, clearly, liz does a great job as the site's most prominent moderator. A very difficult job done in service of providing a functional outlet for us to discuss the fortunes of a club we're passionate about. Much appreciated.

Thanks Danzar. I often replied to Bangalore’s posts as some were a bit bizarre, to say the least! However, I would love to know exactly why he is banned: is it due to disrespecting other posters?

        Thanks, Boss.

Personally, I found Bangalore mildly amusing, strange and annoying at once - but never to the point of offence, even when he was launching a die in the ditch defence of Tom Morris, or suggesting Luke Parker be managed out of the rematch with Essendon, or other odd obsessions. But that's not the point.

Having been on here for more than 18 years, I think the mods do a good job. I've variously been on the end of some warnings, an infraction or two, and I think (from memory) a short suspension - but it was usually because of my own stupidity or self-indulgence, and I always found the mods gave me a clear and fair explanation of why.

        Long may RWO continue.

But seriously thanks to all involved with this site and while I may sometimes push the boundaries I do appreciate all the work that goes into both maintaining the site and a ensuring that comments meet a certain level of decorum.
              Long may it continue.

                Hi Dan

A quick question, I'm sure RWO is older than 20 years. I was on board in the late 90's (with Charlie, Rocklobster and Connolly and of course Liz).

                What caused the disconnect?

What is the history of the site?

I think in it's current format (engine) it is 20yrs.
I do remember a change (a major vbulletin upgrade?) before that where all had to rejoin hence the 2003 join dates for the long term members.

                    2003 members represent!

RWO started life as part of rivals.net which was a collection of fan sites for all sorts of sports team. Besides the message boards, there were articles written by members including previews, reviews, and features (which sadly don't happen any more), resources (which I guess has been replaced by the wiki), polls, etc. You can check out what it looked like back in 2001 using the wayback machine

When rivals.net merged with some other company and gave the message boards the flick, Des (and others) moved the site onto a separate host. I believe there we used another forum software before moving vBulletin in 2003.

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

                          I agree as well.

And thanks to those who added some remarks about the history of RWO, which I didn't know about. I joined in 2007 after lurking for several years, but definitely wasn't there in 2003.

It might be instructive and of some historical amusement to reconstruct a thread of Matt80 from 2014. One thing I remember was his obsession with Christian Petracca. Of course, Petracca has turned out to be a great player, but it shows that one can be right in one sense yet excessive if it becomes obsessive.

The site is such an enjoyable pastime with so many insightful contributors.
It must be very time consuming for the mods.
