Someone pointed out (reasonably imho - I think it was the Mongrel Punt) that players that are within the 9m are normally called back by the umpires rather than a 50 paid. And that (I haven’t checked) this is exactly what happened to Buddy later in the game. The commentators were not happy at all with the 50, but that's because they thought the 50 was paid because Ginnivan went 1cm over the mark. So they thought it was too harsh. They didn't realise until a few minutes later the real reason it was paid.
Edit: ugg beat me to it.
At one point during the game I screamed out to the umpires to apply the same rules to both teams. This was re: unpaid HTB, but I think Ginnivan was over officiated.Comment

The critical point of difference (according to Razor) was that Ginnivan wasn’t in the marking contest (and is not then offered the same warning or leniency as a player who is already in that space). The comparison with Bud is a false one as he was in the marking contest and therefore didn’t run in from outside that area like Ginnivan. Razor suggested the distinction was clear cut.Someone pointed out (reasonably imho - I think it was the Mongrel Punt) that players that are within the 9m are normally called back by the umpires rather than a 50 paid. Makes sense....but can't expect the toothless to differentiate said nuances. The critical point of difference (according to Razor) was that Ginnivan wasn’t in the marking contest (and is not then offered the same warning or leniency as a player who is already in that space). Those particular nuances might be escaping me too. I just re-watched the two instances and the differences are very marginal. Buddy is actually not in the marking contest (as I noted in my post above) - he chased the flight of the ball but didn’t get there in time. The only real difference that I can see is that Bud came from behind the mark while Ginnivan came from the front (he was already on the move when the was in flight to Rampe). They both arrive at about the same time after the mark is taken.
Upon reflection, I probably now share the view that Markwebbos put forward: the game lacked consistency.
There is about 9:45 left on the clock in the second quarter for the Ginnivan one and about 6:45 left on the clock in the final quarter for the Bud one, if you want to check them out.Comment

Ginnivan was already in front of where he needed to be and would have been pulled back by the umpire. But he took an extra step towards Rampe after he was already stationary. The critical point of difference (according to Razor) was that Ginnivan wasn’t in the marking contest (and is not then offered the same warning or leniency as a player who is already in that space). I’m not sure that is accurate. There is no extra step that I can see, Ginnivan’s run towards the mark is continuous.Comment

Thanks for that. I'm surprised and disappointed that there isn't something after the game at the MCG as per prior years. There’s the expensive dinner on Saturday night but free event on Sunday morning if we win.
