We all knew Paddy McCartin would finish up this year, nevertheless it’s a sad outcome for a talented player to have his career so cruelly ruined. He and Tom formed a formidable duo in our defence and were crucial contributors to our march to the GF. I’m glad the club gave him the opportunity to pursue his dream, but I’m relieved for his sake that he’s called it quits. Go well Paddy, and thanks.

Will miss him
Seemed like a good guy and became extremely valuable to our backline"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Really sad story. It sounds like during his time off after the Saints with all the concussion issues he was having he was really at the bottom of the barrel then. I hope the success and positivities of last year playing alongside his brother has made his retirement more palatable, and that he can look back with fondness.
Even though he only played with us for one year, he was one of my favourite Swans. Suprisingly eloquent, thoughtful, sensitive and caring. He and Tom playing together was a favourite in our household and they were a wall of defence. Hearing him talk about his journey and his love of playing alongside his brother was touching - even got a point where they would run to check in or defend each other in the midst of a game when they should've been defending!
Loved his work and we will miss both him as a great KPD but also his eloquence and thoughtfulness as a Swan.Comment

Thank you Paddy- you’ve been simply great for us and a major factor in getting us to the GF. Unfortunately your career has been cut short but you gave your best and we are grateful for your contribution. Wishing you good health from here onComment

He has posted a retirement announcement though (with over 330 responses) accompanied by two photos: 1. Tom and Paddy in the back of a ute in the grand final parade; 2. photo taken from the back of a line-up of Swans players pre-match at SCG, players 30 and 39 side by side, with the members’ stand in the background. I suspect the latter photo is from the 2022 prelim final.
Another difficult health issue for Paddy that we on RWO rarely remembered is that he has suffered from diabetes type 1 since he was 8 years old. I was reminded of his importance as a role model to young kids by a comment from a mother of a young boy with T1D, thanking Paddy as an inspiration to her son.Comment

Paddy has a public Instagram account on which he posts infrequently.

I noticed the amount of team-mates commenting about what a great bloke he is. And he does seem a kind and gentle soul. I wish all the best for him. I hope he works it out and reckon he will.Comment

despite Bradshaw wearing his head gear diligently there are some brain and cranium shapes that are not conducive to repeated hits in . High contact sport like AFL.
The last fall by Paddy Mcartin was astounding how much it affected his consciousness.
I must say I leaned towards Maynard protecting himself when up that high and in a foolish position. There are so many players that try and spoil a ball in a game of footy. I thought it was careless not reckless. I’ve seen ten times worse over the years.
I would suspect Maynard was a small contribution to poor old Bradshaws medical condition, which is tragic….. but I hope it is steps in the right direction To live a healthy life from here on in."be tough, only when it gets tough"
