General footy chat Round 17: the other games.

Not sure if I really care who wins tonight. On one hand, I don't really want to see Collingwood anywhere near the top four and preferably miss the eight. On the other hand, I think Essendon are pretenders and I'd quite like them to miss the eight. Perhaps a draw would be best. With a fair few suspensions.

Don't really care about most of the other games either, but it would be nice if Gold Coast could show that they can actually win south of the Tweed, and I think it'd also be useful if GWS could halt the gathering Carlton momentum.

Yes, Essendon have beaten (at last) a top 8 side.

But,after the match tonight, their percentage is 99.9. This is 13th place %, equal with Melbourne.

      Yey, we're back....it's getting a little tiresome.

Who would have thought the Bombers might actually be good....but it may say more about the Magpies not being as good as people thought?

Went to the bombers pies game. A strange contest with lots of momentum swings, some good play and lots of moments of more questionable quality.

Didn't see anything to suggest either side necessarily will be there when it matters, but both had their moments.

Really enjoyed the whining pies fans about the umpires however. Ha ha ha.

Not even half time yet but the Poodles are currently being smashed by Port. I picked the Poodles in my work tipping comp where I'm leading but happy to forego the W if it means that the Poodles have an uphill battle to make the 8!

There was an article in the Age yesterday about Opening Round next year. I don't want to break the thread by posting a link.

The Opening Round format is going to be discussed at a CEOs meeting to be held in Perth after round 18.

I had to laugh at the following paragraphs about the poor Victorian clubs.

"A senior source at another club involved last year, who preferred to remain anonymous until details were revealed, indicated they only wanted to take part if the travel arrangements were fairer than they had been in 2024."

"Collingwood had a six-day break after travelling to play the Giants in “round zero”, drawn to play Sydney in round one at the MCG. The Swans had an eight-day break ahead of that game. Collingwood lost both matches and did not play a game in Victoria between rounds two and five."

I did enjoy Carlton losing to GWS last night. Got almost 40 points up in the first and it looked all over. Then GWS kicked 14 of the next 16 goals. The Carlton Bigfooty match thread was not a happy place.

I wonder if there will be articles in the press this week about "how to beat Carlton" because, apparently, after Freo knocked us off by a point last week and inflicted just our second loss for the season, everyone now knows how to beat the Swans!

I enjoyed GWS beating Carlton too. The Boos need to be kept in their place. A shame that GWS couldn't keep Curnow goalless but aside from that, a very enjoyable Carlton loss.

North Melbourne got a win. They have been competitive lately but not quite getting the job done. Now they've got that win out of their system, here's hoping they return to business as usual next week when we play them.

Now that Richmond are on the bottom of the ladder, it makes our loss to them all the more mysterious. It reminds me of a game of Stratego where the only moving piece that can take out the Marshal is the Spy.

This season is bonkers. It is amazing how close the ladder is.

How can the Bulldogs play so well one week and then be absolutely smashed the next? It's like a rollercoaster with them.

I don't get how Gold Coast play so differently away from home. Hardwick was really frustrated after the game.

Good to see Carlton lose last night. It was concerning early when they got out to a 6 goal lead. Reminded me when we played them. I guess it's concerning for them that they can fall away after the first quarter.

Am I the only one that didn't realise that the siren that is heard at GWS games is meant to be a Tsunami warning because of the Orange Tsunami label? I've been hearing it on the tv for years but it didn't click until it was mentioned last night. D'oh! They may have the Orange Tsunami but we have the Red Mist????.

Poor widdle Collingwood. 2 games in a row outside Melbourne. What a bunch of @@@@ing sooks.

After Brisbane won, Essendon still haven't beaten a current top eight side!

Other than our game, some satisfying results at the weekend.

Big Vic clubs are so entitled, as if the most favoured side in the comp Collingwood should complain about anything!! Makes me want to spew how the AFL and their press pander to the Pies. My two most hated clubs are the Pies and Dogs, for different reasons of course.

Adam Simpson..... gone. Had to happen I guess. And Toby has now equalled David Rhys-Jones longstanding record for most
sanctions by the AFL with 25. Tho' Rhys Jones only took 182 games to get there. Toby took about 230 games. Toby also has
the record for highest amount of fines paid, though Zac Butters (who is only 23) is closing in on him fast.

Greene, a serial offender, deliberately punches guy in stomach and gets a fine. Isaac, a scrupulously fair player, unintentionally causes high contact and gets a week. AFL a laughingstock.
