    Draft concessions

Can anyone explain to me why you should get extra draft picks, this depriving other teams from getting picks higher up the order, because you can't win enough games? This leads to the situation where teams like Richmond and Hawthorn are better off losing than winning so they can get better draft picks. What a joke!!

I have no problem with teams down the bottom of the ladder getting a higer pick than the ones at the top, but to get those picks PLUS a priority pick is farcical. There should NEVER be a situation where your team is better off if it loses.

I think 3 years at the bottom or something should lead to a priority pick. It should be used to help perennial losers lift themselves from the bottom, not reward one bad season.

It would farcical if say Brisbane had their fab 5 out for a full season, and got a priority pick, then first draft pick and were getting their stars back.

Either some sort of criteria over multiple seasons like you mentioned (say winning less than 15 games over the space of 3 years), or, change the priority pick to a 2nd round draft pick.

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

the system is obviously not too bad i mean the competition is relative even in comparison to a lot of worldwide sports..

even hawthorn could beat brisbane on their day.... well presuming its a real good day.... well actually a real wet day!

Just stumbled across this article by Gerard Healy on this very issue - worth a read.

He makes a lot of good points there. Sheeds suggestion of having them in between the first two rounds has merit too. he also makes a good point about how much it hurts the middle ranked clubs - all the best juniors are gone before they get a crack at them. The AFL generally gets these things right and I suspect it won't be too long before it's changed, but I hope I'm right on this.

Yeah, after reading that, I think maybe a good way to do it is to give a priority pick to the worst performing team over the previous 2 or 3 seasons. Could even give it to the 2 worst performing teams.

Melbourne is a perfect example of how the current system just does not work.

The current system doesn't work.I read a suggestion that the wooden spooners should get an extra pick in the Pre-Season draft, this wouldn't work either.I don't like the over two or three seasons idea either. For me, clubs with less than 3 wins should get a priority pick at the start of the draft.Clubs with less than five should have an extra pick at the end of the first round.

I reckon all interstate clubs who haven't won a premiership should get a priority pick every year until they win a premiership. and the order should be the club who has been waiting the longest without a Flag!!!!!
