2024 AFLW ALL-AUSTRALIAN TEAM: Stars grab seventh blazers, 12 first-timers

Tarrant gets a gig! Slightly surprised but I don't watch a huge amount of AFLW beyond the Swans so I'm not the best judge.

Hurley missed out. That's probably not surprising given how many great midfielders there are in the competition. I suspect she'll get recognition in the AA team at some point in her career.

Sofia Hurley also only got a single vote in the AFLW Brwonlow equivalent, so overlooked in the wider competition - but I would be disappointed if she didn't take the Swans B&F.

Do we need more height down back? Alice is coming along and Interestingly the tallest woman in the AA backline is only 178cm.

I think she'll win but will be pushed by Gardiner. If Gardiner hadn't missed those two games I think she would be (or should be) favourite but those will clearly cost her. Exciting as Hurley's season was, I think we probably took for granted Gardiner's performances because we saw the same last season.

Laura's averages were still great, posessions were almost the same in 2023 and 2024. Clearances dropped from 5.6 to 4.5 - and tackles dropped from over 9 to 5.9

Sofia average disposals went up by 5 per game (only 9 behind Laura ) and clearances almost doubled - now behind only Kennedy and Gardiner. She also topped the average metres gained, but the thing I realy like is the quality of her disposals.

I suspect it will be close too.

Trade target: Swans eye Bomber for backline boost

This article indicates that Heads's desire to move to Adelaide (the city) is to be with her partner. That (somewhat) softens the injury of losing a local player. Presumably the partner is there for professional reasons and it's not unreasonable for Heads to want to be with him/her. While Heads is one of our above average players, it struck me as odd that she'd be a priority target for an already strong club like Port unless she herself had instigated the change of location.

We did OK with the previous midfield recruit from Geelong, so welcome Darcy. We've given a lot for her, pick #22 for her. I'd be disappointed if we didn't get similar for Heads. I hope our pick #4 stays off the table.
With Bullas retiring last night, she'll slot in seemlessly.

I'm not going to get excited about Van Loon or Pullar until they happen. Ditto about losing Ella Heads. I rated her more highly and I know there was talk of her moving upfield, but we depended on her height and marking down back. Jas Grierson doesn't exactly look an upgrade - see below

Delighted that Sofia won, and by a big margin. She's very busy, quick and with probably the best disposal in the team. AA squad-only, my bum.
Interestingly AA Brenna was only #8 in the B&F.
Liz, we've already discussed the AA selectors retardation, but the above doesn't disuade me in that opinion - she also took out the Players Player award.

Kind of sad to see EllaH in the top #10 again when she's bound for South Australia. Although it further highlights that we really should be well recompensed for losing her.
Absolutely delighted to see Alice Mitchell feature, this year was one improvement for her. And having a 6fter in the back half is a great thing.

Swans traded out Ella Heads and pick 40 and receive Ashleigh Van Loon and pick 51, as a part of a four-club trade.

Sydney is currently trying to do deals to acquire Lulu Pullar from North Melbourne and may also be after Amelia Velardo from Carlton. Swans currently hold picks 4, 49, 51, 58 and 76. Pick 4 is not available for deals, so any trade for these players would involve the later picks.

Sydney has pick 4, which will be pick 5 on draft night due to a highly-rated Gold Coast Academy player likely to be drafted in the top 3. The uncertainty with the AFLW draft centres around Melbourne's choice at pick 2. They may select either Molly O'Hehir or Zippy Fish. Their choice will influence draft choices in the top 6 or so.

A quick rundown on the top few players and the likelihood of Sydney drafting them:
* Ash Centra (midfielder) - likely #1 pick for Collingwood.
* Molly O'Hehir (defender/midfielder) - Possible option for Melbourne (pick 2), who are known to be after one of two players from WA.
* Havana Harris (ruck/forward/midfielder) - A versatile player from the Gold Coast Academy. Will end up at Gold Coast.
* Grace Belloni (forward/midfielder) - A possibility to be drafted by Sydney, but may end up at GWS (pick 3).
* India Rasheed (forward/midfielder) - The player most likely IMO to be drafted by Sydney.
* Zippy Fish (defender/midfielder) - Sydney and GWS are both likely to draft forwards, so this quick player is more likely to end up at Carlton (pick 5).
* Poppy Sholz (utility) - possibility for Sydney. Likely top 10.
* Lucia Painter (midfielder) - Could go anywhere from Melbourne (pick 2) to West Coast (pick 6) and has been mentioned as a possibility for Sydney.
* Sierra Grieves (midfielder) - Likely to slide a bit (picks 8 to 11), but will be a good pick for whichever clubs ends up drafting her.
* Sara Howley (midfielder) - Not on Sydney's radar.
* Emma McDonald (key forward) - The best KPF in the draft, a possibility to be drafted by Sydney.

A lot of other players were also mentioned, but I won't list them as they are unlikely to be considered by Sydney.

So the players IMO most likely to be drafted by Sydney with pick 4 (5 on draft night): India Rasheed, Grace Belloni, Poppy Sholz, Emma McDonald, Lucia Painter.

I'll even have a go at a phantom draft here. This is likely to be wrong for most picks but it's a fun exercise.
