Schmidt played 14 senior games in 2007, and comes into the side after Ed Barlow, who was originally intended as Kennelly's replacement, failed to make it through the team's final training session.

Isn't Wilson the one who missed the GF last year? Is he a bit like Kirk in our team being a spiritual leader? Two very big ins in that case

Glad to see Schmidt back in. Moore has really taken over the role that he started to establish last season, and this is a good chance to fight to win it back. Still, it's disturbing to see neither Barlow nor Mathews in the emergencies.

I think there is space for both of them in the team - Moore playing mostly forward, Schmidt mainly in the middle. But while Schmidt is getting match fit they may well have similar roles, and Bird in the team will add to the over-abundance of not-quick, tough midfielders we have.

Re emergencies - I think Barlow is getting over a hamstring(?), and I don't think Mathews offers much any more. Certainly not against a speedy Port at a large ground on a dry day. I was happy to see Fosdike listed.
