Now the hall stuff is out of the way we need to win the game. I have watched us v the saints several times and one of the key factors in the win was the ruck. We were able to smash it forward and win it quickly out of the centre.

That makes me think that beating dean cox will be vital if we are to win the flag, id almost rank him as the biggest threat to our premiership, he is a highly skilled ruckman with a big engine and he is quite kick for his height.

I think jolly will need to keep cox out of the play as much as possible and we need to utilise our 2 ruckman against him, he cant be allowed to get too involved in general play or he will kill us.

Gee, you reckon? And you say you only watched it several times? Just kidding! I don't think either of our rucks can consistently beat cox they way they did against St Kilda but a solid double teaming effort should see him tire out by half time and open the door for us in the second half.

yeah he is in good form at the moment and we really need to be at the top of our game to stop him. when he drops back in defense our players have to try and find ball or jolly so he becomes accountable.

i was impressed with how we smashed the ball forward last week but it isnt any good if it goes straight to a judd or kerr. we need to do our homework around the stoppages. i'm confident in roosy

agreed. i think our boys should be confident of at least breaking even in the ruck contests. they are going to have to work all day keep up the ruckwork, while they may also have to rotate around gardiner as well.

Need to smash it forward when we have the momentum.

In the last qrt, there was no finessing or cute tapping, it was bash it forward and generate the necessary momentum.

Clarke Keating did it sensationally in the 2003.

Be novel idea to try and tag him, just play someone on him one on one the whole day. He nearly won that SCG game off his own boot.

He represents a bigger danger to us up forward than on the ball. Especially with Gardiner down there as well they can really stretch us.

Ball will be fired up for a big last game.

The important thing is we must make him accountable when he drops back in defence to help stymie Hall. Those last seconds at Subiaco were quite telling.

They play 3 ruckmen we can't wear them down.

is another way of saying "target."

Our guys must play bash and barge ala Keating at the centre bounce, in recent weeks they seem to have been using this technique.
Also a good solid punch will help the ball clear the square where their pretty boys hang around waiting for Cox to feed them.

and it has worked well, but perhaps it only will against the shorter ruckmen they have met (mooney and the saints).

'Smash it forward' ruckwork won us the game against Geelong in the last quarter (I know the final play was a tap-down, but you get the idea), and was a huge part of us beating the Saints.

Of course it'll be much more difficult to achieve a/g a quality duo like Cox and Gardner, but we have to stick with the tactic, for at least 2 reasons:
a) knowing that there's a big fist coming at the ball will make it harder for them to try delicate taps into the path of Cousins et al
b) the umpires will be nervous, too: a few balls won't be bounced up dead straight.

Cox's tendency to drop back in defence and take a mark must be curbed. Don't kick it to him!
