If other teams are able to play their home games interstate, why can't the Swans?

I think we should have many more games in Melbourne.

But please don't let Des know when they are!!

No one is saying they are not a Sydney team. It's just that there are 10 clubs in Melbourne, yet we only play 5 in Melbourne.

Strewth Essendon and Collingwood regularly play only 3 interstate games ie. 19 in Melbourne, because they play themselves and Richmond and Carlton twice. Something doesn't quite add up here in the whole context of who plays who and where. This is a fair part of the argument for a couple more games in the "Home of Footy"

When they won the flag in '33, they were stacked with interstaters, many West Aussies, but then they were called the Foreign Legion. I can't recall who if any of the players in '82 were from WA.

Methinks you Sandgropers are drawing a long bow on this one. Next you will be saying the Brisbane Bears had their roots in Kalgoorlie.

Have another SWAN Lager.
This is actually a frequently proferred suggestion of how the Swans nickname arose - both this one and the one about the number of Swans on the Albert Lake. My understanding was that it did date back to the 30s when there were a large number of WA players in that Foreign Legion team.

Not saying it is correct, but it certainly has some credibility.

Yes they did mention Albert Park lake but they stated more of a myth than fact. But please I dont care and I dont really believe alot of what the West writes they rarely get things right just thought was an interesting spin is all.

and thanks I will have another swan your shout next time.

Lizz,

The WA connection may be proffered now, but this is the first I have ever heard of this. I recall as a young boy going to the Lake to feed the Swans, and it was always accepted that this was why we were called the Swans.

My dad followed them all of his 88 years and as far as he knew they were known as the Swans way before 1933. As I said, they were referred to as the Foreign Legion, simply because they had a heap of interstaters. No reference to the WA Swans was ever made by dad, and he had a great knowledge of our history.

Its more to do with the Swans at the Albert Park Lake than the players coming over from WA. Having said that both do apply, with the WA making the Swans nickname more interesting at the time. Both answers are right

The Swans future is in Sydney. It wouldn't matter if all the melbourne suporrters gave it up , the swans would still exist in Sydney. Get used to it.

You really have no idea do you footyhead?

Obviously your from Sydney and subsequently have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If you grew up with the swans in Melbourne like we have, you would have a different perspective on things. Do you ever care to look how many swans supporters are in attendance at the games in Melbourne, sometimes we have the better of the crowd. No other side has two big supporter bases like we do, we should use this to our advantage. Two more games in Melbourne is not too much to ask.

If you think the swans in Melbourne is a "dying" traditition, then you have got no idea what you are on about. I'm sick of being pushed around by "Eddie" and Collingwood, if they play a home game in Sydney, then our games in Melbourne will be cut to 4. If this eventuates, those 2 supporter bases that we have, will no longer exist.

think about it??
