    Player Ratings

The ones in the paper sound like the eagles won by 45

here is my stab at honestly rating each swans players performance out of 10.

Roberts- Thompson 8- the best game i ever saw him play

Barry 9- probably boosted by that mark, just having the courage to go for that and also beating someone so much taller!

    Crouch- 6- solid effort

Kennelly- 8 will always remember a stop with his foot and a dash from defence

C.Bolton- 6 another solid player, performed a role.

Mathews- 6- overlooked by the media a bit, he made a lot of tackles if memory serves me right

Dempster- 5 he was better than many say IMHO, when on cousins he stopped him being effective!

    Bevan- 3 not really needed
Kirk- 8 doesnt have to have the ball to be great, stood up when it counted
Goodes- 8.5 most consistent all day
J.Bolton- 7.5 what is in the helmet, made him awesome in the last!

Buchanan 9.5 he is the norm smith medalist if you ask me!
Schnieder 5 bobbed up a bit (a lot if u believe the commentry)
Davis-4 didnt really do a lot, but we wouldnt be there without him
Okeefe- 6 agree with walls he sacrificed his game for the team a bit, run a lot
Hall-8 crucial goal, provided contests all day CHAMPION
Ball 5.5- helped jolly well, despite the cut to the head
Jolly 7- i thought he at least broke even with cox
Oloughlin 7.5- awesome marking, if he kicked straight would probably have been best just about
Williams- 6- steady head in a difficult game
Fosdike- 9 best game ever ive seen him play great effort has done well this year after looking like he might not play much again last year

Ablett-2 great year noggy, but basically had a free ticket to the game!

let me know what u think

    may be way wrong
Theres not much left to say

id rate ball a 7 IMO

i reckon he had a champion game

other then that it was pretty good, i didn't spot fosdike all that much maybe i was just looking the wrong time when he got it.

yes LRT played the best game of his life!

Goodes, had the potential too take the norm smith, probably had the ball as much as judd, but his delivery was a bit off key, calling for it and missing marks etc.

hard to pick, but i definately agree buchanan was best swans player. Had a few beers with his uncle up at 'The Vine' after the game

      Didn't spot Fosdike? 26 touches!

Well, I agree that it was the best game he has ever played. He seemed to find the ball all around the ground too.

Yes, Ben M. made a lot of big tackles. I liked his game.

I wouldn't disagree much with those ratings...

Although unsighted for most of the day I reckon Davis deserves an extra point for his brilliant, gutsy effort in the last quater.

Got to agree with you here. Davis' scrambling in the dieing moments of the last quarter was great. I just about burst a lung for every stoppage.

Having had a little time for it to soak in, I think Hall was our most important player.

Towards the other end of the scale, I thought Bevan did a great job on Sampi when he came on - stuck to him, tackled hard and didn't give away any free kicks!

            But Judd was clearly BOG.

alot of the media have given bevo only a 3 or 4 which is probably justified but i'm sure the coaching staff would rate it much higher

he did a great job on sampi when he was on him and we all know that he is a bloody dangerous player when he gets going and was really the only small crumbing man in the WC forward line

I'd be tempted to give Crouch a 7. Although he didn't stop Judd (who can!!), he did make life more difficult for him and forced him to handball more.

Kennelly- 8 will always remember a stop with his foot and a dash from defence
Made some superb runs from half back.

C.Bolton- 6 another solid player, performed a role.
Also tempted to give him a 7 as he did a fantastic shutdown role on Chick.

Mathews- 6- overlooked by the media a bit, he made a lot of tackles if memory serves me right
Was on Fletcher and soundly beat him. Also close to a 7.

Dempster- 5 he was better than many say IMHO, when on cousins he stopped him being effective!

Kirk- 8 doesnt have to have the ball to be great, stood up when it counted
Very good, but more like a 7.

Goodes- 8.5 most consistent all day
                I'm thinking more 7 or 8.

Buchanan 9.5 he is the norm smith medalist if you ask me!
                I don't think so, but probably worth a 9.

Davis-4 didnt really do a lot, but we wouldnt be there without him
Didn't get the ball a lot as he's been heavily tagged in the past two weeks, but most of his touches were very effective. Also did some great spoils and hard work in the packs, especially in the last quarter. Was also critical in Buchanan's goal.

Hall-8 crucial goal, provided contests all day CHAMPION
                I thought more a 7.

Oloughlin 7.5- awesome marking, if he kicked straight would probably have been best just about
As awesome as his game was, his kicking nearly cost us, so I couldn't give him more than 6.

Tough to mark a player like Bevan who saw little game time. Looked a lot more composed than in the Geelong or St K games, for mine. The ball didn't seem to come near him much when he was on, which isn't such a bad thing for a guy who was principally a defensive player. In terms of good pressure, not giving away frees and clean disposals on those rare occasions when he had the footy, he was a 7; in terms of his net impact on the game, he was a 3.

Dempster and CBolt are consistently underrated. CBolt is now a senior player, so it's (almost) understandable that he never makes a goddamn mistake. However, Dempster is a first year player! What excuse does he have? We have an absolute ice-cool defender in this kid; people who thought that the Swans weren't adding any talent and so would tread water this year weren't counting on the likes of Dempster and Jolly. With the genius of Leo Barry, LRT playing a blinder, Keneally being irrepressible as usual and B. Mathews playing one of his better games, is it any wonder we kept the Weagles to 7 goals? Our defence won us this premiership; and CBolt and Dempster were a big part of that defence. I would actually grade them 7.5 or 8.

Making due allowances for injury, JBolt really seemed to struggle to get into it for the first 3 quarters, so 7.5 is pretty generous for him.

After the game, my gut reaction was that Goodes was our best (and therefore the Swans' pick for NSM). Reflecting on it, I think that actually he was 3rd behind Fossie and Bucky, with BBBH, Leo Barry, Kirk and LRT providing pressure from the rear.

                    Re: Player Ratings

Roberts-Thompson 8-9 (gotta have a hyphen in there)
                    Barry 10
Crouch 8 - reigned back Judd enough to change the game
Kennelly 8 - for the jig
                    C. Bolton 7.5 - Smashed by Sampi but bounced back
Mathews 6 - I was bagging him during the game for kicking to the wrong team but made up for it with tackles like this.
Dempster 6 - some good hits
                    Kirk 7
                    Goodes 7.5
                    J.Bolton 6.5
                    Buchanan 11
Davis 6 - tried his guts out but well held mostly
                    Okeefe 6
Hall 8 - 10 marks & that oh so crucial goal
Ball 6 - that tap (again)
                    Jolly 7
Oloughlin 6 - yes, great marking - but those yips!
                    Williams 6
                    Fosdike 8 - he must be quick, I can't remember 26 possessions
Ablett (?) - can't say, just SO glad for him that he won't regret this game for the rest of his life. I reckon he's fantastic but was maybe trying TOO hard (if that makes sense)

Basically can't give anyone less than 6, so I won't.

I loved that play out on the wing towards the end. Ripped the ball off an Eagle, then barged through three Eagles to put the ball out of bounds. Seemed to want it a lot more than anyone at that moment.

                        Here is my take:

                        Roberts-Thompson (8.5) Star

Barry - (8) That mark alone deserves this mark. Leo Lionheart showed Gardiner how to play with a heart.

Crouch - (7) battered and bruised throughout the whole finals series, he was relentless and how good was the tap on in the 1st qtr against 5 Eagles?

Kennelly - (7) best HBF in the game atm. That goal was pure gold and what a time to get a set shot right.

                        C. Bolton - (6) Solid as ever. Underated player is an understatement!

Mathews - (7) Shut down Fletcher who had no I50's for the game.

Dempster - (5) Kept his man tight without getting too much of the ball. His tackle break on Cousins and pass to Tadhg was superb in the first.

Kirk - (7) The heart and soul of the club. Played with passion and won alot of his own ball as usual.

Goodes - (7) Started like a house on fire, but let himself down with his disposals. Great roving goal for a 6'4er

J.Bolton - (7) Gritty last quarter effort. Could of had 2 goals in the last quarter to be the hero but played with pure heart.

Buchanan - (9) The star of the show. What can you say about Bucky but he was an absolute terrier on the ball. The 1%ers in the last 5 minutes were something to behold. The spoil on Judd and the off balanced tackle on Nickoski showed how much heart he has. Fitting for him to kick the winning goal....Should have been Norm Smith.

Davis - (4) chased hard and did some nice things. Doesn't matter Nicky D, you got us to this point!

Okeefe - (5) Sacrificed alot of his game and got into the backline to help out. Superb motor on him.

Hall - (8.5) Dominated Glass and was just a huge influence in the forward line. The goal from 50 + was about as big as any of Nicky D's long range bombs.

Ball - (7) Superb last quarter and will be forever remembered as a Legend of the Sydney Swans. Onya Bally!

Jolly - (7) Big Joll was up against the best ruckman in the game in Cox and was able to give a good solid contest. Broke even in the end.

O'Loughlin (7) - Micky O, what can you say. Led Chick a merry dance in the last but couldn't kick em at all. Was marking everything under the sun. Great game despite the inaccuracy.

Williams - (5.5) Willo didn't have a huge influence but still did some nice things out there.

Fosdike - (9) What an impact from the bench. 26 disposals and just carved them up. Managed to find heaps of space and just looked so composed. Star performance on his favourite ground.

Ablett - (2) Clearly injured, but was trashed by Judd. However he definately deserves to be there as he has been superb this year.

Bevan - (4) Underated performance i think from Bevo. stayed tight to the dangerous Sampi and held his own in the end. Definately deserved to be there.

Schneider (5.5) I give him this rating on his 1%ers as they were superb in the last quarter. You won't see a better tackle on Judd like the one he laid near the WCE goal line.
