Credit where credit is Due. They were terrific on Saturday.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC
This year has been a bad year for the umps. But I don't think they're to blame. No doubt they are as confused about the current rules as much as the players, coaches and supporters. The comittee need to review a couple of grey areas - the htb rule for example.
I don't think the game should ever get to a point where the umpires control the match. IMO they featured far too prominently this season. The GF was a great example of how the umpiring should always be conducted - if there's a borderline trangression of the rules or if the decision could go either way, just let it go. The umpires should not have to make their presence felt in every contest.
Interesting that the guys on On The Couch felt like the umpires decided they would throw the AFL directives out the window for the GF and umpire it according to the feel of the game and ajust their interpretations accordingly. Seemed to work very well, particularly with Holding the Ball decisions (or total absence of).
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
While I wouldn't go as far as to say I love the umps ...! I agree they did have a good game, and generally got all the decisions right, so credit to them (still won't redeem Goldspink in my mind though!)
But, I was half expecting a free to be paid for Leo committing some phantom infringement at the end...!
Admittedly it's easy to be magnanimous when your team has just won the flag - but even if we'd lost, I'd had to begrudgingly admit the umpires did their job well
