    Swans giant kllers

    Swans send Brisbane packing
    May 11 2003

Sydney's giant-killing antics continued today with Michael O'Loughlin kicking five goals to hand the Swans a 19-point AFL win over reigning premier Brisbane.

The Swans followed up last week's 20-point win over Collingwood with a 15.8 (98) to 11.13 (79) victory over the Lions at the SCG.

O'Loughlin took two marks yielding quick goals to set the Swans off to a promising start.

Lions forward Alastair Lynch kicked a point from a difficult angle in the ninth minute and it wasn't until four minutes later that Michael Voss scored Brisbane's first major with a goal from 50m after a pass from Martin Pike.

But O'Loughlin replied with a close-range snap and Nick Davis followed, marking a pass from Nic Fosdike and kicking true from 40m on an extremely difficult angle, virtually on the boundary line.

O'Loughlin kicked another goal for the Swans to give the home team a 17-point buffer at the first break.

Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews moved 18-year-old rising star Jared Brennan, who kicked a goal in the first term, onto O'Loughlin late in the opening quarter.

The initiative paid off with O'Loughlin kept quiet until shortly before halftime when he fended off his young opponent to take a strong mark and goal.

The Swans continued to dominate through the second quarter, with veteran Daryn Cresswell contributing two majors.

Brownlow Medallist Jason Akermanis was quiet, using his first touch of the match midway through the second term to handball to Lynch, who scored an easy goal on the run.

It was one of just two Lions majors for the quarter as the Swans took a 29-point lead into halftime.

Impressive Sydney youngster Adam Schneider showed excellent poise as he scored a confident goal from 45m on the run to open the second half.

But from there, the Lions lifted, outscoring Sydney 4.3 to 1.3 to pull back within 11 points at the final break.

Schneider again provided an inspirational opening to the last quarter.

While being tackled, O'Loughlin handballed to his young teammate, who gathered under pressure and scored a goal from a snap 10m out on a tight angle.

Two goals in the space of a minute by Justin Leppitsch had Sydney well and truly under the pump with a lead of just three points at the 17-minute mark.

But Jared Crouch's goal from outside the 50m arc a short time later proved the turning point as the Swans added two more to claim the win

It wasn't a "snap". It was a deft kick
Only 9 notes? How easy can it be!
