'Leo Barry you star' sounds pretty brainless to me. Does nothing to relate the mark to the game situation. It's a pity Tim Lane wasn't calling at the time.

I love Quarters' call at the end. "Last roll of the dice for West Coast" followed by "Ahhhh, Leo Barry you star" is perfect for that situation. What else needs to be said?

I thought Qtrs had a shocker, called Schneider Buchanan and vice versa more than once.

Worst call was confusing kennelly and Fosdike ! esp seeing as Kennelly was 15 metres on his own in side 50, hardly other players confusing matters and kennelly had run length of ground to take mark

It was a GF you think you might make an effeort to learn what the participants looked like !

In defence of Quarters... a lot of the commentators over the past couple of years have mixed up Amon and Schneids... come on, from the back they look pretty similar!! So he wasn't the first, and he won't be the last...

It probably doesn't matter what he said at the time, it was significant because of what went on... i'll remember "Leo Barry you star" even though i didn't hear it til i saw the replay, because when i know i hear that, it means the Swans won the flag! Historical significance! hehe

I thought it was Silvagni that called Kennelly Fosdike?

Both commentators confused Buchanan and Schneider. It actually seems to be something quite common.

Hmmmm, Doesn't the Huddo "I see it but I don't believe it" call from the Port PF rate a mention?

Qtrs made the call but Silvagni went on to apologise for the error !

Can only assume Qtrs did not know who it was and Silvagni gave him the name 'off air'

It's the wrong adjective. Barry is not a 'star' because he took that mark. A 'hero' perhaps. Or he could have noted that he 'saves it for the Swans (again)'.

Perhaps I'm being tough, but its the ability to produce the right words in these moments that separates the great from the good ordinary commentators.

Extra words are just superfluous in that situation.

It's the excitement of the call in key plays that makes it work.

All words were superfluous in that situation. The commentators' calls are made famous by the events on the field, rather than having any intrinsic value of their own. 'Leo Barry you star' will thus stick in our memories simply because it is associated with the most legendary event.

For the same reason, 'Jesaulenko you beauty' and 'Hit the boundary line' became famous calls.

Just listened again - Quartermain says "Dempster goes over the top to Fosdike, Fosdike can play on, beg your pardon it's Kennelly."

Then Silvagni makes the same mistake "Super vision that and Fosdike was on his own" and later says "My call was wrong, it was actually Kennelly".

If only you could use those large figures on the back to somehow determine which player was which.

Not extra words - just the right ones. Agree that the right level of excitement is also important.

I see it but I don't believe it is the best call.
