Will we delist anyone?

It's five days after our last game, and so far we've lost

Schauble
Nicks
James

Possibly Maxfield

Not sure who we'd delist if we didn't have to. Spriggs, Sundqvist, Fixter and Powell are the four players that seem past the stage of 1st/2nd year youngsters trying to develop their bodies etc. Spriggs has got a year left though, I think. Fixter still seems in favour with the coaching staff and Sunny and Powell - I'm not really sure about them.

We only have to draft 3, right?

Is Maxfield a veteran yet?


This year we had 40 senior players and 7 rookies (after Vogels was promoted for Doyle). We're already down to 36 without any trades or delistings.

If the club didn't really want to keep Spriggs, despite apparently having one year on his contract, I'm sure they could come to some sort of agreement. If Spriggs is told he has very little chance of playing in the seniors then I'm sure he would rather go elsewhere than play in the reserves.

That's a big IF though because with so many retirements I think the club may like to keep him around.

We might not delist anyone. There are two reasons:

1. Reading the player list from the draft camp, I feel this draft is not going to be any flashy. A real mix bag. Given that we are not going to improve our draft position, our forth pick would most likely be after the 60th pick.

2. We have at least five - to six players who have been in system for a while and still without AFL experience. There is no point of adding so many more to that list, just for the sake of it.

Hence my expectation that we'll go with a bottom-age player, a player that was higly rated before getting injured and a mature age tall.

We won't be expecting much at all from this draft.

I've got to admit that I'm confused about the state of Sydney's list. Normally, you can have no more than 44 players on your list, including rookies, including veterans-- the lot.

I am presuming that Sydney's 'local rookies' are excluded from that 44-person headcount (because if they're not, our list stops making any sense at all). But even on that assumption, it appears that we've had 47 players on the books this year. Is it actually the case that we have an allowance of 4 local rookies (i.e. 2 per year on rolling 2 year contracts)?

What I can say, though, is:

Nicks isn't a 'real' loss (off the 38 on the senior list), b/c he was on the veteran's list.

But on the other side of the ledger, Maxfield is a real loss off that list (whether he plays on or not) b/c he can go to the veteran's list.

If we ignore the rookie mess (and we'll have to, otherwise my head will start to ache), then the magic number we have to get down to is 35 on our senior list. In a supposedly 'weak' draft, particularly given Roos' willingness to take established players instead of picks, there is no way we'll take more than 3 picks (I would have thought).

We're on 38 (ignoring Vogels in that tally). Subtract Schauble, Ball, James and Maxfield and you've reached 34. But Vogels is a certainty to be promoted, and the word on the street is apparently that Grundy is very very likely to get a guernsey. I agree, though, that there is no point in promoting him just for encouragement's sake, if he's not actually a chance to play a senior game in 2006.

So, if all of the above comes to pass, we'll have to dump one more player. Sundqvist and Fixter would have to be glancing at each other nervously.

I reckon Spriggsy is still young enough to train his butt off (skills not endurance) and have another crack at a game in the AFL in 2006.

Who knows what might happen. If he was chronically injured and playing rubbish, then I would be keen to see him bounced off the list. However, given our ability to change the way men play their games, he might be able to revolutionise his game.

Maybe he can become an accountable mid or Crouch type stopper if we're hit with a patch of injury!

I agree with the rest of your analysis, but Powell must surely be first in line for the chop.

In the past, when Sundqvist and Fixter have been fit and firing they've been in the mix for the seniors. Powell has been fit all season, but barely gets on the emergency list even when there are bulk injuries.

However, they may not dump anyone . . . just delist and re-draft like they did with Buchanan and James in previous years.
