In NSW where AFL is played on grounds which usually cater to League or Union then a hooter is most likely what they use. Originally there was a bell rung by the timekeeper. Everything else since than is not original. In many codes in lower grades its just the ref's whistle.

Refs in the other codes, which I was referring to (obviously not clearly enough). The inference being that Aussie Rules takes a back seat in many areas of NSW and Qld.

That's right , those compressed gas things are called hooters , while most football matches of any repute have sirens which are technically slightly different .It's not uncommon to hear the common car horn as the official sounding . I was going to say it's not uncommon to hear the "final horn" , but most commonly the battery's flat by the end of the game and all pandamonium breaks out .
